From Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening national security and leveraging the Nigerian diaspora as a strategic resource for economic and national development. The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Sola Enikanolaiye, stated this at the dinner of the Nigerian Diaspora Economic Conference in Toronto, Canada.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Strategic Communications, Richard Elesho, the minister acknowledged security as a major challenge but said the government was working to address threats that have affected the country for years.

Enikanolaiye also said Nigeria was entering a new phase of strategic partnerships with international allies, including the United States, focused on security, defence, economic prosperity and citizens’ welfare. He described Nigerians living abroad as “critical assets of national development”, stressing that the government was seeking ways to harness their skills, expertise and resources for national priorities.

The minister urged Nigerians at home and abroad to overcome ethnic, religious and tribal divisions and focus on cooperation that promotes economic growth and development. “We are aware of the trust deficit that exists among Nigerians, especially those of us abroad. Let’s try and break those barriers,” he said.

Enikanolaiye also commended Canada and other international partners for supporting stronger cooperation with Nigeria, anchored on mutual respect and shared interests. He thanked the conference organisers and members of the diaspora community for their contributions to Nigeria’s development and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with stakeholders to advance the country’s interests.
