SERAP, 261 individuals and groups sue NBC over fine on broadcast stations

The Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP)alongside 261 individuals, Civil Society Organization (CSO)and media groups have sued the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC)over N9 million naira fines it imposed on three TV stations

The NBC had levied fines on the AIT, Arise TV and Channels TV for alleged unprofessional reporting of the massacre of peaceful #EndSARS protesters in Lekki Lagos on October 20 by the Nigerian Army.
The suit filed at the Federal High Court Abuja on Friday is seeking orders of the court to annul and set aside the fine which it insists is unlawful.

The suit also joined the Minister of Information and Culture as respondent in addition to the DG of NBC, Prof Idachaba
SERAP had earlier warned and asked NBC to withdraw the fines as they negate press freedom provided for in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria

They call that NBC imposing such fines on media organization is simply an attempt to muzzle the media and enthrone impunity
