NUJ Commiserates With SOSG Victims Of Sokoto Fire Disaster

By Muhammad Goronyo, Sokoto

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council has commiserated with the Sokoto state government and the victims of the central market inferno.

The market was gutted by fire last Tuesday. This was contained in a release signed and issued to newsmen in Sokoto by the Secretary of the Union, Abubakar Imam.
The council while describing the disaster as a great loss because the market is the “most valuable asset” to the people of the state, commended the timely intervention of the state government.

It specifically applauded Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal for setting up a committee under the leadership of his deputy, Mannir Dan’iya to ascertain the cause of the inferno and assess the damage caused by the fire.

It hoped that the committee will complete its works within the given timeframe, as this would enable the state government to assist the victims in earnest.

NUJ also urged the government to ensure the provision of motorable roads and fire equipment in all the markets across the state to avoid future reoccurrence.

It also called on the traders to support and cooperate with the committee in order to do a thorough job.

It also commended the men of the federal and state fire services who worked tireless to quench the fire.

The Council however, thanked the Governors of Kebbi and Rivers States for supporting the victims at this trying time.
