Bayelsa community inaugurates vigilante to combat crime

Amgbare Ekaunkumo Yenagoa

In a bid to further advance the community policing policy of the Federal Government, the Paramount ruler of Yenagoa Community, Chief Clarkson Kikile, in collaboration with Yenagoa council of Chiefs, has inaugurated a  vigilante group code named “OWULODIEGBE”  with a charge to combat crime and criminality.

The 60-man vigilante members are expected to patrol all the nooks and crannies of the town, in collaboration with the state’s vigilante group, the police and other security agencies, to ensure that the area is safe for indigenes and visitors to do their business.

Chief Kikile, while inaugurating the new vigilante group in community townhall , called on miscreants that have been causing mayhem in the town to turn a new leaf or be flushed out.

The monarch said the initiative was to consolidate on the achievements of Governor Douye Diri in the area of security, and to rid the town of all criminal elements that had given it a bad image.

“From today, if they do not desist from their nefarious activities, they would be flushed out from this town.

“Enough is enough and the gallant officers and men of the OWULODIEGBE would not rest on their oars in
dealing decisively with these criminals.

“We are therefore strongly advising all those who have been disturbing the peace of this town to refrain from such acts in their own interest and in the interest of peace and stability of the town.

“At this point, I would urge the officers and men of the OWULODIEGBE to be alive to their responsibilities by performing their duties diligently and efficiently in order to restore the peace and stability in the town and also to justify the confidence reposed in you as members of this security outfit.

“This security outfit is formed mainly to complement the efforts of all the government security agencies in Yenagoa town.

“The problem of security is a collective responsibility, it therefore demands the cooperation, collaboration or symbiotic efforts by the government law enforcement agencies the indigenes and non-indigenes of the community and all the members of the OWULODIEGBE to address this insecurity severely and
aggressively in order to reduce to the bearest,”.

Speaking in the same vein, Chief Ajaiye Sakwe, chairman of Yenagoa council of Chiefs, described the exercise as proactive, aimed at checkmating the activities of miscreants, while noting that once Yenagoa was safe from crime, other parts of the state would follow suit.

He advised the new security officers to work within the ambits of the law.

In his remarks, chairman of OWULODIEGBE security, Mr.GodGift Fefegha thanked the Paramount ruler of Yenagoa Town, Chiefs, Elders, Youths for finding him worthy to head the security outfit and pledged not betrayed the confidence reposed on him.

High point of the event was the presentation of security gadgets to members of OWULODIEGBE by the monarch which include communication gadgets, torchlights, matchets and security vest.
