Nasarawa govt begs striking doctors

By samuel Itsede

NASARAWA state government has pleaded with the state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, to shelve its planned indefinite strike action for the sake of humanity.

State Deputy Governor, Silas Agara, made the appeal at a meeting with leadership of the association which is already observing a 3-day warning strike in Lafia.

The deputy governor, who led government delegation to the meeting, attributed the ongoing warning strike by the medical doctors to communication gab between government and the association.

He assured the NMA that the state government would look into some of their appeals with a view of addressing them and commended them for their understanding.

The association wants issues of career stagnation, high tax and 22 months arrears of corrected salary structure amounting to over N400 million to be addressed.

Earlier the state NMA chairman, Dr. Bulus Umaru expressed optimism that the interface with the state government would yield desired results.

“The government has assured us that already the issue of career stagnation among civil servants is being given attention. The issue of high tax and arrears of corrected salary structure were also attended to”

Umaru noted that the congress of the association would have to meet to review their discussion with government delegation, assuring that by 8:00am on Thursday, Doctors  would be at their duty post to attain to patients.

Daybreak reports that the association started a three-day warning strike from Monday April  1, to press home its demands for better welfare.
