Adebayo Adelabu, Nigeria’s Minister of Power, has instructed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and related agencies to implement recommended measures to overhaul the national power grid, addressing ongoing grid collapse issues. The order follows a report of a grid disturbance caused by a sudden frequency spike, as revealed by Bolaji Tunji, the minister’s adviser on strategic communications.
In October, Adelabu established a committee to tackle frequent grid failures. Their recommendations include auditing and testing existing equipment, completing key projects, and investing in new infrastructure. They emphasized the need for public and private investments, modernizing outdated systems, and enhancing SCADA and telecommunications tools to ensure reliability.
The committee also called for steps to combat energy theft and vandalism, along with deploying IoT devices on power-generating units. The TCN has assured that efforts are underway to maintain uninterrupted power supply by implementing these solutions.
