AFAN Welcomes Finance Minister’s Support for Farmers as FG Moves to Stabilise Agriculture

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has welcomed the Federal Government’s proposed intervention to support farmers following the recent decline in food prices below production costs. The association described the move as timely and critical to sustaining profitable agriculture in Nigeria. AFAN’s reaction followed an announcement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, on measures being put in place to cushion the impact of falling market prices on farmers across the country.

In a press statement signed by its National President, Honourable Muhammad Magaji Gettado, and made available to journalists on Tuesday, AFAN commended the Federal Government for recognising the challenges faced by farmers despite the relief lower food prices have brought to consumers.

The association noted that while the gradual reduction in food prices aligns with the Federal Government’s food security objectives, it has forced many farmers to sell their produce at prices far below the cost of production.

According to AFAN, this development poses serious risks to the sustainability of the agricultural sector.“ This situation, if not urgently addressed, could discourage farmers, reduce future production, and threaten the sustainability of the nation’s agricultural sector,” the statement said.AFAN expressed optimism over the Finance Minister’s assurance that concrete measures are being developed to protect farmers from losses. The association said such interventions are necessary to restore confidence among producers and prevent a decline in agricultural output.

The farmers’ body suggested that the proposed support should include strategic produce offtake, strengthened commodity aggregation, access to affordable financing, targeted input support, and expanded market stabilisation mechanisms. These measures, AFAN said, would help shield farmers from losses while ensuring a steady national food supply.According to AFAN, the intervention reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to balancing the interests of farmers and consumers in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises agricultural transformation, rural development, and economic stability.

The association reiterated its readiness to collaborate with the Federal Government, state governments, and relevant agencies to ensure the effective implementation of the proposed support measures. It stressed that structured engagement with genuine farmer groups is essential for achieving lasting solutions in the sector.

AFAN also called on farmers nationwide to remain resilient, assuring them that the Federal Government’s intervention would help stabilise the agricultural sector and promote sustainable production.“ The All Farmers Association of Nigeria remains committed to advocating for farmer-friendly policies and supporting government efforts aimed at achieving food security, improved livelihoods, and a resilient agricultural economy,” the statement added.
