By Ogenyl Ogenyi, Uyo

At least 65 suspects have so far been arrested by the Police in Akwa Ibom following cult related clashes that occurred in several parts of Uyo in the last one week.

The clashes which reportedly led to the death of about 17 persons although police confirmed four has heightened tensions in the Nwaniba road axis with many residents of the area said to have remained indoors while some have fled to safer parts of the town.

State Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon in a statement said a proper screening would be done on those arrested.

According to Macdon,”those found culpable will be charged to court while those not connected to the crisis will be let go.ome are already helping the Police with useful information.

“We urge Residents to remain vigilant and go about their normal businesses as normalcy is being restored.”

The clashes was said to have started as a result of disagreement between rival cult groups over the control of bus parks along Nwaniba road in the capital city.

The crisis escalated and spread to other areas as cult members from sorrounding areas joined in solidarity with their groups.

Though security agencies have increased security in the affected areas and skirmishes have reduced, fights were still said to have continued to take place in some parts of Nwaniba road while fear of attack has lingered.
