A’Ibom Police arrest 10 over killing of policemen

The Police in Akwa Ibom has said that the State Joint Task Force have arrested 10 suspects in connection with the recent attacks on security agencies in Essien Udim Local Council and environs.

The attacks which led to the death of several officers, destruction and loss of several police properties also led to the displacement of more than 5,000 people from their home, creating a refugee challenge in the area.

A statement from the State Police Commissioner, Aniegheme Andrew in Uyo on Wednesday said the arrests followed coordinated raids on the locations of criminal elements at Ntak Ikot Akpan, Abama and Ikot Akpan in Essien Udim, Obot Akara and Ikot Ekpene Local Government Areas.

“A total of ten (10) suspects who are directly linked to the killings of security Personnel and destruction of property were arrested.” It said.

According to the statement four vehicles, four motorcycles, four AK 47 Rifles, four G3 rifles, eight Dane Guns, to Riot Guns, 28 AK-47 magazines were recovered from the suspects.

Also G3 magazines ,654 rounds of ammunition,10 cartridges 96 smoke cartridges, one Smoke Grenade, 21 teargas bombs ,39 Hand Grenade Anti-Riot irritants, N63,000 cash and other equipment stolen from residents and security agencies were recovered from the suspects.

“Owners of the above mentioned vehicles are to go to 6 Battalion, Nigerian Army, Ibagwa with proof of ownership for identification and collection or contact the State Police Headquarter, Uyo.” It said.

The commissioner expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army and other sister security agencies for their immense contribution to the exercise and urged them to continue to work as a team to secure the state.

“I urge Akwa Ibomites to go about their lawful duties without fear of molestation and never relent in being vigilant and giving timely information to the Police and other security agencies.” The statement concluded.
