About 1,000 rural women in Akwa Ibom is to benefit from a business support programme initiated by the Wives of Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria, WALGON.

Addressing the beneficiaries in Uyo yesterday, President of WALGON, Mrs Bright Achibong said the project was in fulfillment of a pledge by WALGON to empower 3 women in each of the 329 wards of the 31 Local Government areas in the state.

Archibong said that the women would be empowered with startup capital to support their trade in a deliberate move to improve the quality of their lives.

” It is our means of appreciating our women for their humongous support and commitment towards the successful re-election of His Excellency, Mr Udom Emmanuel, the Governor of Akwa Ibom for four more years from 2019-2023.” She said.

The President explained that the rural women played pivotal roles in the mobilization of voters and spreading the message of peaceful conduct during the last general elections.

“Today WALGON is here to say thank you to the women and also distributing grants to help and encourage our rural women to have the means of finding their own solutions and creating values for themselves economically.” She said.

She solicited for partnership from well meaning Nigerians to enable them increase the number of beneficiaries from three to five persons per ward as well as increase the size and scope of the empowerment programme.

While appealing to the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the priviledge to create wealth Archibong also employed other women to join the beneficiaries as collaborative partners in wealth creation.

“This is necessary for the collective good of our communities while you exercise patient for your opportunity in the nearest future.” She said
