All Souls’ Day, which falls on November 2, is a day dedicated to remembrance and intercession for the departed souls. It holds great importance in the Christian liturgical calendar. This observance is marked by various Christian denominations, especially within the Roman Catholic communion, as a day of prayer for all the faithful who have passed away, including those who are believed to be in purgatory—a state where they undergo purification before entering heaven, often due to lesser sins. All Souls’ Day is a time to remember and pray for the souls of the departed, with a special focus on those in purgatory. From the date, history, and wishes to quotes, here’s all you need to know about this significant day.

**All Souls’ Day 2023 Date and History:**
All Souls’ Day will be observed on Thursday, November 2, immediately following Halloween on October 31 and All Saints’ Day on November 1. The tradition of offering prayers for the deceased has ancient roots, notably in 2 Maccabees 12:42–46. However, the establishment of a specific day for intercession for the departed souls is credited to St. Odilo of Cluny, a venerated Roman Catholic saint. It is believed that this custom was initiated at St. Odilo’s abbey of Cluny sometime between 998 and 1030. What began as a local practice quickly spread to other monasteries and dioceses across France. After being adopted in Rome in the 14th century, it has become a universal observance in the Western Catholic tradition.
