Aniagwu Decries Slow Progress on Issele-Azagba/Otulu Road Project

By Anne Azuka

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work on the Issele-Azagba/Otulu Road project in Aniocha North Local Government Area.

During an inspection of the project, Aniagwu stated that he was unimpressed with the contractor’s speed, emphasizing that he had clearly communicated his concerns.

“If the contractor wants to continue working with the state government, he must accelerate progress,” he said. “I have also highlighted several issues that need to be addressed to meet the quality standards the government requires.”

He warned that failure to improve the pace of work could lead to decisions unfavorable to the contractor.

At Idumu Etiti Street, Owerre Olubor, in Ika North East Local Government Area, Aniagwu expressed satisfaction with the contractor’s performance.

“I am very impressed with the work done on this road. If you drive through, you’ll see significant engineering efforts in its construction,” he remarked.

However, he pointed out a minor issue concerning water flow into a catch pit. “There’s a small area leading to the catch pit that needs adjustment. We have instructed the contractor to ensure proper drainage to prevent erosion that could damage the drain deck. The contractor has assured us that this will be addressed,” he added.

Regarding the Mission Road/Ogboi Street project in Akumazi, also in Ika North East, Aniagwu commended the asphalt work but noted some drainage issues.

“The asphalt work is solid, but some drains leading to the catch pit are misaligned. The contractor must ensure the drain terminates directly into the catch pit. Otherwise, floodwater momentum could cause damage to nearby properties, affecting peasant farmers who may lack the resources to mitigate the impact,” he explained.

Aniagwu gave the contractor a three-week deadline to resolve the issues, stating that payment would only be processed upon satisfactory completion.

“If the work is not done properly, no payment will be approved. I know the contractor wants his money, but to get it, the job must be completed to our satisfaction,” he declared.
