Aniagwu Defends Governor Oborevwori’s ‘Governor of the Year’ Award for Fiscal Discipline and Innovation

By Anne Azuka

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has defended the selection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as Governor of the Year for fiscal discipline and innovative governance.

Aniagwu made this statement on Monday in Asaba, responding to criticisms from Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the immediate past Deputy President of the Senate, who questioned the award. Aniagwu highlighted that Governor Oborevwori has completed numerous projects and initiated new ones without borrowing funds, demonstrating financial prudence.

“We thought we were alone in observing these giant strides of the governor, but even from far away Lagos and Abuja, the editors of THISDAY and ARISE News had been taking copious notes,” Aniagwu stated.

He added that Governor Oborevwori inherited many uncompleted projects and has successfully completed several without accumulating additional debt.

He also criticized Omo-Agege’s remarks, saying:

“If their state is being recognized for progress, they should be happy instead of trying to de-market it for personal interest.”

Aniagwu reminded critics that Oborevwori had defeated Omo-Agege in 21 out of 25 local government areas in the 2023 elections, urging him to engage in more constructive opposition.

Major Projects Under Governor Oborevwori

– Infrastructure & Road Construction:

– Over 15km of roads awarded in Ndokwa Nation

– Obi-Ibabu road (4km) completed

– Ndemili-Utagba Uno road & Eweshi-Utagba Uno road under construction

– Beneku bridge completed; Asaba-Ase bridge awarded

– Education & Healthcare:

– Four public universities—one in each senatorial district, a unique achievement in Nigeria

– Renovation of over 150 healthcare centers

– Equipment upgrades at Warri Central Hospital & DELSUTH Oghara

– Housing:

– 30 three-bedroom units and 20 two-bedroom units under construction in Ozoro, Kwale, and Owa-Oyibu

Aniagwu also warned against illegal land grabbing,  stating that the government would demolish any structures built on public land.

Response to Senator Ned Nwoko’s Exit from PDP

Regarding Senator Ned Nwoko’s resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Aniagwu dismissed concerns, stating that the party remains strong in Aniocha North and Delta North Senatorial Districts.

“Nwoko has a history of defections, but the PDP will continue to win elections in Delta North and beyond,” Aniagwu remarked.

Governor Oborevwori’s administration remains focused on delivering on its MORE Agenda, emphasizing fiscal responsibility, infrastructure development, and social services, despite opposition criticisms.
