Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Osun State, has called upon President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the alarming rise of cooking gas prices across the nation.
Expressing concern over the economic burden faced by Nigerians in accessing basic necessities, Oyintiloye emphasized the difficulty citizens encounter in affording cooking gas for preparing meals.
Speaking to journalists in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, Oyintiloye highlighted the escalating cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder, which now ranges between N17,500 and N18,000 in many areas.
He referenced the February 22 announcement by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, regarding the suspension of liquefied petroleum gas exports. However, Oyintiloye noted that this measure has yet to translate into relief for consumers.
Acknowledging President Tinubu’s receptive stance, Oyintiloye urged swift action to address the challenges facing Nigerians, including the impact of fuel subsidy removal and unstable electricity supply.
He stressed the importance of collective efforts from stakeholders to tackle issues within the oil and gas sector, suggesting that clandestine exports by LPG producers could be contributing to the price surge.
Oyintiloye also emphasized the environmental repercussions of resorting to solid fuels like charcoal and firewood, highlighting their adverse effects on air quality, climate change, and human health.
In commending President Tinubu for his efforts in stabilizing the economy and urging support for his Renewed Hope Agenda, Oyintiloye called for patience, resilience, and unity among Nigerians to overcome prevailing challenges.
