At least eight people were killed on Monday when a fully loaded Dangote truck lost control and rammed into traders and passers-by at the popular Oko Market near Asaba, Delta State. Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The accident occurred around 11:15 a.m. close to the Asaba end of the Niger Bridge. Eyewitnesses said the truck, which was speeding, veered off the road and ploughed into the crowded roadside market where trading was in full swing.
Emergency responders rushed the injured to St. Rebecca Hospital in Mami Market, Asaba, for treatment. The scene has since been cordoned off to prevent further casualties and ease traffic congestion.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement, but rescue operations and investigations were ongoing as of press time.
Residents noted that motorists have long endured harrowing experiences on the failed portions of the expressway at the Asaba end, which may have contributed to the incident.
