  • Middle Belt forum fumes, say’s NSA downplays Benue horrific attacks

Middle Belt forum fumes, say’s NSA downplays Benue horrific attacks

    By Achadu Gabriel, kaduna

The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has expressed deep concern over the comments allegedly made by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, during his recent condolence visit to Benue State Governor, Father Hyacinth Alia, following the horrific attacks by armed men identified as Fulani herdsmen, saying comments were inaccurate, callous.

The Forum noted that the attacks have left scores dead, entire communities displaced, and thousands fleeing in desperation, and joined the ranks of hundreds of thousands already living as internally displaced persons (IDPs) in their own homeland.

MBF displeasures were contained in an elaborate statement issued and signed by its national spokesman Mr. Luka Binniyat and made available to newsmen in kaduna Thursday, lamenting that while condemning the violence, the NSA downplayed the crises by suggesting it was part of a global trend, citing examples like Sudan and Mauritania.

“MBF is deeply concerned by the comments made by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, during his recent condolence visit to Benue State Governor, Father Hyacinth Alia, following the horrific attacks by armed men identified as Fulani herdsmen.

“These attacks have left scores dead, entire communities displaced, and thousands fleeing in desperation, joining the ranks of hundreds of thousands already living as internally displaced persons (IDPs) in their own homeland”, it stated.

MBF stated that “What should have been a solemn, compassionate visit turned into a controversial development. While condemning the violence, the NSA downplayed the crisis by suggesting it was part of a global trend, citing examples like Sudan and Mauritania.

It added that “Even more disturbing, he denied any territorial control by armed groups in Nigeria, contradicting well-documented realities. This denial flies in the face of evidence”.

Forum recalled that “In Benue State alone, where Ribadu made these claims, many communities remain under the occupation of armed Fulani militants who violently displaced the original inhabitants.

“Similar situations persist across parts of Southern Kaduna, Plateau, Niger, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, and Zamfara states. Even Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno has publicly admitted that Boko Haram has regained control of areas they were once expelled from”, it stated.

The forum stated that it’s therefore alarmed and puzzled by the NSA’s statements, demanding to know who is briefing him, adding that on what basis is he dismissing credible reports of occupation and atrocities?

According to forum, NSA’s remarks were not only inaccurate, they were callous, especially when so many IDPs lived in subhuman condition, stripped of their dignity, homes, and livelihoods.

They added that to suggest no one occupied their lands “Is to deny them justice and hope of return to their homes and restitution paid in the future.

The forum also raised concerned about the ongoing North Central Workshop on Developing a National Framework on Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration” currently being organized in Makurdi under the NSA’s office.

Forum noted that while such frameworks are vital, there is a glaring omission and the MBF has its position on it, lamenting that kaduna Governor last year granted amnesty to so-called “repentant” terrorists in Birnin Gwari, but nothing was said about their countless victims -families shattered, communities ruined, and lives reduced to misery.

“Further raising concerns is the ongoing “North Central Workshop on Developing a National Framework on Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration” currently being organized in Makurdi under the NSA’s office. While such frameworks are vital, there is a glaring omission and the MBF has its position on it.

“Meanwhile, last year, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State granted amnesty to so-called “repentant” terrorists in Birnin Gwari. He said that it was an outcome of robust collaboration with the NSA’s office. He pledged to rehabilitate them, for dropping their arms. These are men who have committed mass killings, arson, and kidnappings.

“Yet, not a word was said about their countless victims—families shattered, communities ruined, and lives reduced to misery. We suspect that the ongoing workshop may align with the Kaduna model, which had no consideration to the victims and has no space for justice.

“We must ask: will the proposed disarmament workshop also target communities who, in desperation, have armed themselves with rudimentary weapons to defend against terrorist onslaughts? Would this not contradict the February 2025 call by the Director General of the Department of State Services, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, urging communities to act as first responders in self-defense?

The lists their positions amongst other things including “No Blanket Amnesty for Terrorists, urging that government must not allowed murderers and destroyers of communities to simply surrender weapons and walk away free, Justice must be served”.

It also include right to Self-Defense, stating that communities under siege should be supported, not disarmed. “The government should help them legally procure light weapons, train youth volunteers, and place them under the supervision of vetted military or security personnel, serving or retired”.

On State and Local Policing: “The MBF reiterates its call for the establishment of State Police, as well as Local Government and Ward Police structures. Security must be localized to be effective”.

“No Unilateral Forgiveness of Criminals: Amnesty and reintegration programs must follow legal processes and legislative backing. The Federal and State Governments must not unilaterally pardon terrorists without public accountability.

“The time has come for serious, responsible, and empathetic governance that truly reflects the pain and suffering of affected communities. The NSA must offer leadership that reassures victims not pamper terrorists.

“The Hundreds of thousands of “repentant” Boko Haram terrorists granted amnesty has not solved the insurgency issue in the North East”, MBF stated.

According to the statement dated 9th May, 2025, one Mrs. Lami Samuel Dawa attempted to give a statement about Hadiza Abdullahi’s alleged drug-pushing business at the Police CID office, but the police officers prevented her from doing so.

The statement reads in parts: “Therefore, we are calling on the Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the Federation, as well as the Inspector General of Police, to draw the attention of the Borno State Commissioner of Police to ensure justice, equity, and fairness in this matter.

“Aisha, a student of Yarwa Government Girls Secondary School in Borno State, met her teacher, Mallam Sani, and confided in him about her discomfort with her mother Hadiza Abdullahi’s alleged involvement in illegal drug business, utilizing some security agencies to transport and sell the drugs in villages.

“Mallam Sani offered help, and Aisha later discussed this with her mother Hadiza. Hadiza Abdullahi then advised Aisha to tell Mallam Sani that she wanted to accept Jesus as her Lord and personal savior.

“After Mallam Sani prayed for her, Aisha claimed her mother was planning to kill her, prompting Sani to send her to Bauchi for safety.

“However, unknown to Mallam Sani, Aisha and her mother Hadiza Abdullahi had allegedly planned this scenario to blackmail him and create tension between Muslims and Christians in the state”, it stated.

It added that “When Aisha arrived in Bauchi and later moved to Jos, the Plateau State capital, for training, she began experiencing health issues upon arriving at the Ismail and Haggar Foundation”.

“The organization’s leaders took her to the hospital, where she was treated for the effects of drugs. After completing her treatment, Aisha continued with her training until she finished the program.

“The school leadership then asked her what she wanted to do next. Aisha expressed her desire to continue her education, and they enrolled her in the Christian Faith Institute. However, Aisha soon began engaging in prostitution, frequently leaving the school premises and staying out overnight.

“The school administration addressed her behavior, warning her that such actions were unacceptable and contrary to the institution’s Christian principles. When Aisha refused to comply, the school suggested she return to her parents.

“Aisha left the school and met a Fulani Muslim convert who had become a born-again Christian. Despite her insistence on staying with him, he refused due to her behavior. With the intervention of some elderly people, Aisha was placed with a family in the hope that she would change her ways.

“But Aisha failed to change her attitude of prostitution, and they asked her to return to her parents. However, when Aisha left the house, she stole some items, including two phones belonging to the family. Aisha falsely claimed that Mrs. Lami Dawa had bought her a phone. Aisha is wanted in Jos.

“Meanwhile, Muslim police officers are allegedly using their uniforms, guns, and the authority of the Nigeria Police Force to intimidate, harass, and molest Christians in Borno State. Mrs. Lami Samuel Dawa attempted to give a statement about Hadiza Abdullahi’s alleged drug-pushing business at the Police CID office, but the police officers prevented her from doing so.
