Chairman Pastor Robin Angonimi Apreala is rallying Bayelsa Queens FC to finish the NWFL Super Six with a flourish after the Prosperity Girls battled to a 1-1 draw against Nasarawa Amazons on Sunday.

In a hard-fought clash, Janet Akekoromowei fired Bayelsa Queens ahead in the 56th minute, converting a penalty after Jennifer Oliver’s handball in the six-yard box. Nasarawa Amazons responded, leveling the score on the hour mark to earn a share of the points.

Apreala, unwavering in his belief, urged his squad to seize victories in their remaining three matches. “We’re still in contention,” he said.

“Every game is a challenge, but we’ll approach each one with focus and fight to hit our targets.”
The result keeps Bayelsa Queens in the hunt for the NWFL’s sole championship ticket, but Apreala emphasized that only wins will secure their goal.

“We’re optimistic, but we need to put in the work,” he noted, calling for sharper execution on the pitch.
Led by Coach Christopher Danjuma, the Prosperity Girls showed attacking promise, with Akekoromowei’s penalty a standout moment. Yet, a defensive error allowed Nasarawa’s equalizer, an area Apreala wants addressed.

With three critical games left, Bayelsa Queens are gearing up for a pivotal stretch. “We’re still on course,” Apreala asserted, confident his team can deliver under pressure.

The Prosperity Girls now prepare for their next test, aiming to transform Apreala’s rallying cry into results and keep their NWFL title aspirations alive.

  • Laws of Political Gravity Akpabio and the Pundits

Laws of Political Gravity Akpabio and the Pundits

    By PATRICK WEMAMBU,

Sometimes politics resembles one of the weirder branches of modern physics or a fantasy version of biology. Time may seem to run backwards; solid things turn out to be insubstantial; black holes swallow up the light; the dead may walk the Earth. Ghouls crawl out of cleft rocks, velociraptors not only reappear but learn to speak and alarmingly, open doors. That was how Eliot A. Cohen described the scenario in his treatise ‘Trump Can’t Escape the Laws of Political Gravity’ published in The Atlantic
    January 27, 2025.

    Dogged by controversies with calls for and against his stepping down from the exalted Office of the Senate President by both pundits and supporters, one might be tempted to postulate that Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio is in the eye of the storm. Like Trump, like Akpabio? Casting the first stone – in a manner of speaking – Olu Fasan in a piece he authored titled ‘Nigeria is diminished with Akpabio as Senate President,’ published in The Vanguard newspaper April 10, 2025, lectured;

“The strength and viability of any country’s democracy depend, to a very large extent, on the strength and quality of the legislative branch of its government. This is because it falls solely to the legislature to make the laws upon which a country is governed, to shape government policies, and to oversee the executive branch.

“Thus, as one scholar puts it, the legislature is a ‘driving force in government’ and the ‘heart and soul of a democracy’. But the nub of the matter is the fundamental principles of separation of powers and checks and balances.

“Under those principles, each of the three branches of government – Executive, Legislature and Judiciary – has a separate sphere of authority but also the power to check other branches. Democracy atrophies, government dysfunctions, and abuse of power prevails in any country where there are no effective separation of powers and checks and balances.

“Unfortunately, Nigeria lacks effective separation of powers. Instead, there’s a fusion of powers, because the Executive branch has colonised the Legislative and Judicial branches. The National Assembly is a rubber stamp that endorses and legitimises the illegal and unconstitutional acts of the Executive, while the Judiciary overrides explicit constitutional provisions and adopts an expansive interpretation to give a ruling that the Executive wants, as the Supreme Court did in the so-called local government autonomy case, where it turned the Constitution and the principle of federalism on their heads by adopting, in its own words, ‘a progressive interpretation of the law.’

“Yet, no democracy can thrive without judicial independence and legislative independence. Sadly, neither exists in Nigeria!”

Leaving aside the acute institutional failure, the writer lamented that there are also acute moral and leadership failures. Maintaining that since Akpabio became the Senate President in 2023, he has demonstrated leadership without responsibility and accountability – he opined that through his ‘constant indiscretions, verbal incontinence and egotistical behaviour,’ Akpabio has brought the Office of Senate President and the institution of the Senate itself into disrepute.

“To be sure, if Nigeria were a country where integrity is a criterion for political leadership, Akpabio would never be Senate President. But throughout his political career, he has acted with impunity, avoided accountability and, yet, reached top national positions because of his political usefulness to the powers that be,” the pundit rationalized.

Reminiscing on his journey to the Senate presidency, Fasan highlighted the trajectory of the former two-term governor and later Senate Minority Leader under the PDP, who defected to the APC in August 2018. After helping Buhari to win more votes than he did in 2015 in Akwa-Ibom State and across the South-South, the reader is informed Akpabio was rewarded with a ministerial position, as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs. He reeled on and on until his take on the controversial senatorial elections.

Perhaps throwing their weight behind Fasan, 56 CSOs have asked Akpabio to resign amid the Court Verdict On 2019 Elections. Yet, a coalition of civil society organisations and political support groups has declared its unwavering support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio, dismissing the recent allegations of sexual harassment against him as politically motivated.

In a resounding show of solidarity, the coalition passed a vote of confidence in Akpabio, maintaining that his leadership remains crucial for legislative stability. Meanwhile – interestingly enough, in the midst of the calls for his resignation – Akpabio has said he will not step down. “I am not one of those who step down for what is false and when eventually it is proven that the allegation is untrue, they simply say oh, as if it makes up for it,” he told his colleagues during plenary last Thursday in the Red Chamber.

And the question arises, how does Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio defy the laws of political gravity? These includes a situation where a politician suffers a major upheaval/set back in career following a low approval rating. Political juggernauts have pointed to what they describe as some of the selling points of Akpabio. His personality traits that make him successful in politics. Kiran V in a piece titled Political Marketing published Jun 16, 2020 alluded to such features as being charismatic, confident and persuasive. Determination is also mentioned as an important factor with insightfulness and ambitious drive.

Long story short, will Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio continue to succeed in navigating the laws of political gravity? Only time will tell as he pilots the affairs of the Upper House after reconvening for its 137th session last week. Essentially, the ranking parliamentarian will need to fall back on mother luck and his personality traits towards parrying criticisms – especially those considered unconstructive with a view to prosecuting the Legislative Agenda of the Senate. These include introduction of new bills, presentation of Committee reports and deliberations on pressing national issues.

  • 2027 is a done deal for Gov Uba Sani, President Tinubu – Rep. Amos Magaji

2027 is a done deal for Gov Uba Sani, President Tinubu – Rep. Amos Magaji

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

A Member representing Zangon kataf/Jaba federal Constituency and Chairman House committee on health Care services, Hon. Dr. Amos Gwamna Magaji has expressed uptimism that 2027 is a done deal for President Bola Tinubu and the Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani.

Hon. Magaji who’s has already declared his intention to run for Zone 3, Southern Kaduna Senatorial District position in 2027 made the disclosures in an interview with newsmen weekend at the venue of the 10th Authentic News Daily lectures at Arewa House Kaduna.

Rep Dr. Magaji who decamped to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), said Governor Uba Sani has been doing excellently well, attributing his success to the reasons Southern Kaduna people found a breath of hope in the ruling party.

“Governor Uba Sani has been doing excellently well and part of the reasons why our people in Southern Kaduna have found a breath of hope and you can see them”, he said.

He also said “Before now if I had joined APC probably they would have stoned me but now with the ray of hope that is coming in Southern Kaduna, people have decided and have seen a party to join so, the credit needs to go to Senator Uba Sani and also the President Bola Tinubu.

“This is because for the first time in a long while, the people of Southern Kaduna are seeing Inclusiveness, and therefore Governor Uba Sani has done well in his visit, projects, performance and his appointment, so the people of Southern Kaduna are now believing in this government.

‘So for we to cross carpeting into the APC, and then that also encourage other people to come into the party and with that it’s going to be a done deal for Uba Sani come 2027 and then of course the President APC come 2027″, he stated.

He however noted that 2027 is still some years ahead adding however that victory is in the hands of God “but what we have been doing well for our people we shall continue to do it”.

“2027 is still some years ahead and then it’s in the hands of God but what we have been doing we shall continue to do it.

“The good work that we have been doing for the people by promoting health care services in Nigeria and of course in our own Constituency, we shall continue to do it until the time comes and the people say they have found us worthy to represent them and continue to do the good work, the people will decide.

On why leaving House of representatives for Senate, Hon. explained that the Senate and house of representative is still one family as both are national assemblies.

He emphasized that Nigeria is running bicameral legislation, adding that Bills passed in the Senate would still need the concurous of the house, and Bills passed by house “will need the concurous of the Senate, so it’s still one big family”.

“For me it’s not about running an election or going to unseat someone, but to deliver quality representation, but time will come when the people will decide on their own

“But running for Senate is what we are putting our heads to do and the ultimate choice will be in the hand of the people. They will compare the two and decide which one they want to go based on performance indices of your stay in the house of representatives”, he highlighted.

Hon. Magaji also stated that even though he talks less but more in love with performance and promised to surprised his people.

“Like the Bible says that men shall see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven the work we have done in Zangon kataf and Jaba federal Constituency is clear for everybody to see even our opponents can testify that God has used us to transform Zangon kataf and Jaba, and if given the opportunity to do it in larger scale, we will do it.

“The Bible says that he that is faithful in little shall be faithful in much’, he restated with emphasizes. He decamped from opposition People’s Democratic party (PDP) in the midst of many.

  • Rivers to Pay Over N2.8 Billion in Pension Arrears to 583 Retirees on Monday

Rivers to Pay Over N2.8 Billion in Pension Arrears to 583 Retirees on Monday

…Ibok-Ette Ibas Launches Seamless Payment Reform to End Years of Pensioners’ Ordeal

    By Kumo Amgbare

In what has been described as a historic intervention in the state’s pension administration, the Rivers State Government is set to disburse over ₦2.8 billion in pension payments to 583 verified retirees on Monday, 12th May 2025, marking a bold step towards restoring dignity and convenience to long-suffering pensioners.

According to sources close to the administration, “this is the outcome of a sweeping reform process initiated by Ibok-Ette Ibas, the Administrator of Rivers State, who has prioritised resolving the lingering pension backlog and ending the recurrent hardship that retirees endure in accessing their entitlements.”

A source, who spoke to Daybreak Nigeria, but doesn’t want her name in print, explained that “unlike previous exercises that required pensioners to travel long distances and spend days queuing at verification centres and payment points, the entire disbursement will be done electronically.”

She also said the funds will be transferred directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries, enabling them to receive their pensions from the comfort of their homes.

According to yet another source, the Administrator personally supervised the audit and verification process to ensure that only eligible pensioners are captured, and no retiree is subjected to further bureaucratic delays or indignity.

A senior government official who confirmed the scheduled payment described it as “a major victory for transparency, compassion, and good governance.”

“What is happening on Monday is not just a payment; it is a restoration of trust,” the official said.

“This has been made possible because of the leadership style of Ibok-Ette Ibas, who insisted that governance must serve the people, especially our senior citizens who gave their best years to this state.”

Pensioners’ groups across Rivers State have hailed the development as unprecedented, with some describing it as a “new era of human-centred governance.”

A retired primary school teacher in Khana LGA expressed relief and gratitude:

“We have been travelling from place to place for years without success. I thank the Sole Administrator for remembering us. This is the first time someone is treating pensioners like human beings.”

Observers say the move may set the tone for a more technology-driven and inclusive public sector reform in the state, especially as more retirees are expected to benefit from the phased clearance initiative in the coming months.

With this development, the Administrator is reinforcing the state’s commitment to good governance above politics, ensuring that the welfare of the people—especially the elderly—is placed above every other consideration.
