In the words of Martin Luther King, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michaelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry.” This philosophy embodies the life of Distinguished Senator Enyi Abaribe, who, at 70, has tirelessly served the people of Abia State and Nigeria.

Senator Abaribe’s journey to success has been marked by resilience, intellectual brilliance, and unwavering determination. From his academic achievements at Government College, Umuahia to his MSc in Economics at the University of Benin, he consistently demonstrated a passion for learning. He first ventured into teaching before making his mark in the corporate world, holding significant positions in companies like SCOA Nigeria Plc and NICON.

Abaribe’s political journey began in 1999, where he served as Deputy Governor of Abia State under Governor Orji Uzor Kalu. Despite enduring three impeachment attempts, he rose above the challenges and resigned in 2003 to run for Governor, creating the Otuonu Movement, which swept across Abia State. Although his gubernatorial bid was unsuccessful, he remained steadfast in serving the people.

In the Senate, Abaribe’s leadership was undeniable. He held prominent positions such as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information, Chairman of Senate Committee on Power, and Minority Leader. He played an instrumental role in the “Doctrine of Necessity” that resolved the political impasse during the illness of President Yar’adua.

His efforts to support Nigerian-made products, especially through the Made in Aba Trade Fair, earned him the title “Made In Aba Senator.” His commitment to local economic growth continues to inspire both the Abia State Government and the nation.

Abaribe has also been recognized for his commitment to education and was appointed Chairman of the Nigerian Institute for Educational Policy and Administration. His work has earned him several chieftaincy titles, including MMA Agha Ndigbo, and recognition from various groups.

At 70, Senator Abaribe remains a beacon of inspiration, known for his visionary leadership, community service, and commitment to nation-building. He is a proud father of three, a grandfather, and a passionate soccer fan.

Funding Intelligence Gathering Will Help Tackle Insecurity – Speaker

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, has reaffirmed the commitment of the House leadership to increase funding for intelligence gathering as a means to combat insecurity in Nigeria.

Speaking at a one-day public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Nigerian Security and Intelligence Trust Fund, Dr. Abbas, represented by Hon. Victor Nwokolo, stressed that insecurity remains a major threat to national stability, leading to the loss of lives and property.

He emphasized that security agencies operate with limited resources, making it crucial to support the bill, which aims to supplement budgetary allocations for security-related initiatives.

Hon. Ahmed Satomi, the bill’s sponsor and Chairman of the House Committee on Security and Intelligence, praised stakeholders for their contributions. He stated that beyond a kinetic approach, a well-funded intelligence framework is critical to achieving lasting security solutions.

“Increasing intelligence funding will enhance research, training, and the development of security agencies,” he added.

Speaking to journalists after the hearing, the Commandant General of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Navy Captain Umar Bakori (rtd), said the trust fund is timely and necessary.

He noted that VGN members, present across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, have been sacrificing personal resources in the fight against insecurity. Adequate funding, he emphasized, will strengthen community-based security efforts.

Bakori also expressed optimism regarding the Vigilante Group of Nigeria Bill, which seeks official recognition for the group’s operations.

Representatives from the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police, DSS, Customs, Ministry of Defense, and the VGN attended the hearing, each submitting their views on the proposed bill.

The proposed Nigerian Security and Intelligence Trust Fund is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing intelligence capabilities, equipping security agencies, and improving collaboration among security stakeholders to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges effectively.

The inspection team commended FERMA for executing high-quality and durable reconstruction work, particularly noting the efficiency of the drainage system in managing stormwater runoff.
Speaking during the inspection, the Honourable Minister of State for Works urged community members to take ownership of the infrastructure by protecting the road and refraining from activities that could damage it.
He emphasized the need to prevent indiscriminate speed bump installations and to keep drainage systems clear to mitigate flooding, especially during the rainy season.
The Minister also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for prioritizing infrastructure development, particularly in the road sector, which is vital for economic growth. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the successful execution of these projects in line with the administration’s vision.
In his remarks, FERMA’s Managing Director, Engr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi stressed the agency’s continuous efforts to preserve road infrastructure.

Water is the biggest threat to road longevity, and we are working closely with local communities to keep drainage channels clear,” he stated.
In a related development, Engr. Agbasi announced that the agency has acquired new equipment through the support of the Japanese government.

Shocker: Many SSS3 girls cannot afford NECO fees in kaduna -GPFN Country Director decry

    *Laments GBV in public schools

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The Country Director Global Peace Foundation, Nigeria (GPFN), Rev. John Joseph Hayab, has revealed that many girls in Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS-3) in Kaduna are facing the heartbreaking reality of being unable to sit for their NECO examinations simply because they cannot afford the fees.

Rev. John Joseph Hayab, made the revelation Tuesday in a keynote address at the Media Roundtable Discussion on Girl Child Education and Gender-Based Violence in Public Schools on February 25, 2025, at NUJ Secretariat, Kaduna State Council.

He also said there are two critical issues that deeply affect Nigeria society, citing the education of the girl child and the alarming rise in gender-based violence (GBV) in our public schools.

“These issues demand our collective attention and urgent action. Education is the most powerful tool for breaking cycles of poverty and empowering young people to build a better future.

“Yet, across Kaduna State, many girls in Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3) face the heartbreaking reality of being unable to sit for their NECO examinations simply because they cannot afford the fees.

“This financial barrier is forcing many bright and hardworking students to drop out at the final hurdle of their secondary education, limiting their opportunities and deepening inequalities”, he said.

While he commended Kaduna state Governor Uba Sani, for his passion and significant strides in transforming the education sector in Kaduna State, Hayab said Uba Sani administration has shown a clear commitment to improving access to education by reinstating the SSCE fees.

According to him, the SSCE fees  policy had been discontinued by the previous administration adding that the bold step demonstrated his dedication to ensuring that no child is left behind due to financial hardship.

However, while the government has commendably allocated a budget line for these external examination fees, “it is crucial that the funds are released immediately”.

“Delay in disbursing these funds will mean that thousands of students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, may miss their examinations this year. We cannot afford to let this happen”, he said.

He therefore appeal directly to the Kaduna State Government to prioritize the immediate release of funds to sponsor NECO examinations for SSS3 students.

“This is not just a matter of policy—it is about the future of our children and the economic growth of our state. Education is an investment, not an expense. When we educate a girl, we educate a family, a community, and a nation.

“But when financial constraints deny a child this opportunity, we all bear the consequences. If we truly want to see sustainable development in Kaduna State, we must remove every obstacle that prevents our children from accessing quality education.

“Through the Rise Up Project, Global Peace Foundation Nigeria and Back to School Educational Initiative have conducted in-depth research to understand the root causes of school dropout among girls in Kaduna State.

“Our findings revealed that poverty, the government’s previous withdrawal of SSCE fee payments, and the harassment of girls in schools are the major factors pushing young girls out of school.

“In response, we have taken concrete steps by mobilizing community support to amplify these issues and demand action. Additionally, we established 30 Community School Safety Committees across the three senatorial zones to address harassment and create safer school environments.

“These committees serve as watchdogs, working with school authorities, parents, and law enforcement to mitigate acts of violence and ensure that schools remain safe spaces for learning.

“The prevalence of gender-based violence in our public schools is alarming and requires an urgent attention. Girls should not have to choose between education and safety. Schools must be safe spaces where they can learn, grow, and thrive without fear of harassment or abuse’…….

Rev. Hayab called upon the Kaduna State Government, school administrators, and relevant stakeholders to implement strong policies and accountability measures to prevent and address GBV in our schools, saying,”Every girl deserves an education free from fear, intimidation, or exploitation”.

The media plays a vital role in shaping public discourse and holding leaders accountable urging them to continue amplifying the voices of these young girls and advocating for policies that prioritize their education and well-being.

“We must collectively push for the immediate release of examination fees to ensure that no child in Kaduna State is forced to abandon their education due to poverty. We must also work together to create safer schools for our children.

“Governor Uba Sani has taken commendable steps toward improving education in Kaduna State. Now, we urge him to complete this process by ensuring that the necessary funds reach those who need them most—our children”, he said.

In his remarks by the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, Alhaji Abdulgafar Alabelewe said Education is the greatest equalizer, and for girls, it is a powerful tool for breaking the cycles of poverty, inequality, and violence. However, in Kaduna State.

“As we gather to discuss the pressing issues of Girl Child Education and Gender-Based Violence in Kaduna State schools, I want to emphasize that these issues are not only moral imperatives but also essential for the socio-economic development of our state and nation”, he said.

He said the e scourge of Gender-Based Violence in schools is a stark reminder of the dangers that our girls face daily”, adding “No child shouldn’t feel safe in school, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that our schools are safe for all”, while enjoined colleagues of the important of their roles in shaping public discourse and holding policymakers acceptable.

  • Millions Out-of-School children risk left behind increasing technology driven worldwide -Expert/CEO CDF

Millions Out-of-School children risk left behind increasing technology driven worldwide -Expert/CEO CDF

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Education is the foundation of any thriving society, yet millions of children worldwide remain out of school, deprived of the knowledge and skills needed to secure a better future, according to Capt. Caleb Danladi Bako, expert and founder of the Caleb Danladi Foundation (CDF).

In a statement released yesterday, Capt. Bako expressed concern over the severity of the crisis, particularly in developing nations, where poverty, conflict, and inadequate infrastructure create insurmountable barriers to formal education.

He warned that without urgent intervention, these children risk being left behind in an increasingly technology-driven world, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting national development.

To break this cycle, the CDF CEO emphasized the need to harness the power of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) innovation to create inclusive, accessible, and transformative learning opportunities for out-of-school children.

According to Capt. Bako, the global shift toward a digital and knowledge-based economy demands a workforce equipped with STEM skills. However, millions of children lack access to even the most basic education, let alone exposure to advanced subjects such as coding, robotics, or artificial intelligence

He further noted that traditional classroom models, while effective in structured environments, fail to reach marginalized children living in remote areas, conflict zones, or impoverished communities.

“This is where innovation through STEM can play a transformative role by offering flexible, scalable, and engaging learning solutions,” he said.

One of the most promising approaches to addressing this crisis, according to Capt. Bako, is the use of technology-driven education. Digital learning platforms, mobile applications, and virtual classrooms provide opportunities for children to acquire foundational knowledge even in the absence of physical schools.

“Low-cost tablets, solar-powered learning centers, and mobile education buses can bring lessons to children in underserved regions, allowing them to learn at their own pace,” he stated.

Interactive STEM programs incorporating gamification and hands-on experiments can also enhance engagement, ensuring that children develop problem-solving skills and creativity from an early age.

Innovation in STEM education also opens doors to alternative pathways for skill acquisition, particularly for out-of-school children forced into informal labor at a young age.

“By integrating STEM-based vocational training into community programs, children can acquire marketable skills in fields such as renewable energy, digital technology, and engineering,” Capt. Bako explained.

“These skills not only prepare them for employment but also empower them to become entrepreneurs and innovators in their communities. A young girl who learns to build solar panels or repair electronic devices, for instance, gains the ability to contribute to her local economy while securing a sustainable livelihood,” he added.

Capt. Bako stressed that partnerships between governments, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector are critical in scaling up these solutions.

“Policymakers must recognize that traditional education systems alone cannot bridge the gap. Investments in alternative learning models leveraging STEM are crucial,” he noted.

He called on organizations committed to education reform to collaborate with technology companies to develop affordable and accessible STEM learning tools. He also urged community-driven initiatives, supported by local leaders and educators, to tailor programs to the specific needs of children outside the formal school system.

The Caleb Danladi Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that every child, regardless of circumstance, has access to quality education.

“Through targeted STEM initiatives, we aim to provide innovative learning solutions that equip out-of-school children with the knowledge and skills to build better futures,” Capt. Bako affirmed.

“Our vision is to create a world where no child is denied the opportunity to learn, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to society. By embracing STEM innovation, we can break down educational barriers, uplift communities, and build a generation prepared to meet the challenges of the future,” he emphasized.

Capt. Bako underscored the urgency of the issue, warning that as the world advances technologically, failure to equip children with the right skills will lead to widening inequalities and lost potential.

“Investing in STEM-based solutions for out-of-school children is not just an educational necessity—it is an economic and social imperative,” he stated.

“If we are to create a brighter future, we must act now, ensuring that no child is left behind in the pursuit of knowledge and opportunity,” he concluded.
