Basketball Promoter Igoche Mark Calls for Overhaul of Nigeria’s Sports Architecture, Commends First Lady’s Support

Renowned basketball promoter Igoche Mark has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s sports infrastructure, highlighting the need for improved facilities, athlete welfare, quality coaching, and increased funding. Mark, known for founding the Mark D’ Ball Basketball Championship, acknowledged Nigeria’s abundant talent but stressed that raw talent alone is insufficient for sustained success in global sports.

His remarks follow the Nigerian Paralympic team’s impressive showing at the Paris Games, where they won seven medals—two gold, three silver, and two bronze. The athletes were recently honored by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who hosted them at the State House and awarded cash prizes: $20,000 to gold medalists, $10,000 to silver medalists, and $5,000 to bronze medalists.

Mark commended the First Lady’s gesture, describing it as a morale booster for the athletes and a positive recognition of their hard work. He praised the Paralympic team for their consistent excellence, noting they have historically been one of Nigeria’s most successful sporting delegations.

Despite the team’s achievements, Mark emphasized the urgent need for a systemic overhaul of Nigeria’s sports sector to unlock its full potential. He advocated for greater government investment in sports infrastructure, such as training facilities, high-performance centers, and medical support for athletes. He also called for better athlete welfare programs, enhanced coaching standards, and more robust funding mechanisms.

“The Nigerian government must prioritize sports development, providing the necessary resources and support for our athletes to excel,” Mark stated. “A total overhaul of our sports architecture is long overdue, and I hope that the government will take this call seriously.”

Mark’s comments echo growing concerns among Nigerian sports stakeholders, who have long pushed for significant investment in sports development. As Nigeria seeks to build on the successes of its Paralympic team, Mark’s call for a complete overhaul of the country’s sports framework is seen as a key step toward unlocking Nigeria’s full sporting potential.
