Bayelsa NUJ Urges State Government to Immortalise Late Deputy Governor Ewhrudjakpo

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State Council, has called on the Bayelsa State Government to honour the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, by naming a monument and a street after him.

The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of an expanded State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre in Yenagoa.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who served as deputy governor under Governor Douye Diri from 2020, died on December 11, 2025, at the age of 60. According to official accounts, he collapsed at his office in Government House and was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was later confirmed dead.

The meeting was attended by members of the NUJ State Working Committee, former council chairmen and secretaries, chapel leaders, and past executives of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).

In the communiqué signed by the NUJ State Council Secretary, Imgbi Gbalipre Stanley, and committee member Alambo Datonye, the council commended the leadership of its chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, for what it described as a new administrative direction.

The SEC urged the council’s leadership to address outstanding liabilities, improve the state secretariat, and intensify efforts to curb quackery in the journalism profession. Members were also advised to meet their financial obligations, while government institutions and stakeholders were encouraged to strengthen collaboration with the NUJ.
