Bayelsa Smashes Delta to Claim Table Tennis Gold in Style

Bayelsa State’s men’s table tennis team unleashed a dominant 3-0 rout of Delta State to seize gold at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival on May 26, 2025.

The team led by formidable Samuel Boboye, the squad dazzled with pinpoint precision and airtight teamwork to overwhelm their opponents in a one-sided final.

Olajide Omotayo set the tone, cruising to a 3-0 victory in the opening set. Taiwo Mati kept the momentum, securing a 3-1 win in the second.

The duo of Omotayo and Azeez Sholanke sealed the triumph with a flawless 3-0 doubles victory over Delta.

Bayelsa’s march to the final included a statement semifinal victory over host Ogun State, while Delta fought past Lagos to earn their spot.

The win showcases Bayelsa’s intense preparation and standout talent, positioning them as frontrunners in the festival’s overall race.

Mr. Amaebi Stow, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association, credited the team’s success to Governor Senator Douye Diri’s steadfast support, which fueled their preparation and drive.

Hon. Alaowei Opukeme, Technical Adviser on Sports Development, praised the team’s dominance, emphasizing that Bayelsa remains a formidable contender for the festival’s overall title.
