Bello Lawal Elected ALGON President, Succeeds Aminu Mu’azu Maifata

By Abel Leonard, Lafia

Bello Lawal, the Chairman of Kaita Local Government Area in Katsina State, has been elected as the new President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON). He succeeds Aminu Mu’azu Maifata, the Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, following an election held during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital, early Tuesday morning.

In his acceptance speech, Lawal expressed gratitude to the NEC members for entrusting him with the leadership of the association. He pledged to build upon the achievements of his predecessor and ensure that ALGON continues advocating for the autonomy of local governments across the country.

“I am deeply honored by this responsibility, and I assure you all that I will give my very best to further the cause of this great organization,” Lawal stated. “With the support of every member, I am confident that we can push the objectives of ALGON toward a successful outcome, especially in the ongoing struggle for local government autonomy.”

Lawal also called for unity among members, emphasizing the importance of cooperation to achieve their common goals. “I appeal to all members to work together with me to realize the vision we share for strengthening governance at the local level,” he added.

The outgoing President, Aminu Mu’azu Maifata, congratulated Lawal in his farewell speech and urged ALGON members to fully support the new leadership. He praised the NEC for conducting a peaceful and transparent election, expressing confidence in Lawal’s ability to lead the association effectively.

“I have no doubt that Bello Lawal will elevate ALGON to greater heights. I call on all of you to extend the same cooperation you gave me during my tenure,” Maifata stated during the handover ceremony.

Daybreak reports that this election marks a new chapter in ALGON’s leadership as it continues its advocacy for stronger local government administration across Nigeria. Lawal’s tenure is expected to focus on improving the welfare of local government councils, ensuring effective grassroots governance, and promoting the financial independence of local councils nationwide.
