Benue Adopts Volunteer Guards in fight against Criminality

By Isaac Kertyo, Makurdi

Benue State expanded Security meeting on Thursday adopted Volunteer Guards as a security outfit to compliment the efforts of other security agents to stamp out criminality in the state.

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom who briefed Journalists shortly after the meeting, explained that the renewed attacks on Benue Communities by Suspected Herdsmen overstretched security operatives, hence the need to look outside the box.

“The renewed attacks on Benue Communities by Suspected Militia Herders have overstretched the security agents attached to the state. The stakeholders meeting looked at the security situation in Benue State and resolved to change the narrative.”

The Governor hinted that the aforementioned security outfit must have weapons that are recognized by the law to enable them tackle insecurity in the state.
According to the Governor, the State Coordinating Unit would be headed by himself, Deputy Governor Engr Benson Abounu among others, while Local Government Units would be coordinated by selected stakeholders.

Ortom reiterates that there is no going back on Open Grazing Prohibition Law, stressing that “it is the right thing to do than to take law into our hands. I will continue to do that which is of the best interest of Benue State”, he said.

He continued: ” Benue State believes in the rule of law. We believe in the Unity of this country. We are trying to look for ways to assist the security agents posted to us.” He noted that there is need to fight insecurity devoid of political and religious sentiments.

The Governor lauded President Muhammadu Buhari over the deployment of Military Troops, Operation Whirl Stroke to the state to tackle banditry. Ends
