The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has vowed to overhaul the Nigerian Correctional Service following recent allegations of misconduct. These claims surfaced in a viral audio shared by Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, where Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, alleged that after his sentencing, his godfather, in collaboration with the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, arranged for him to serve his six-month sentence in a private residence.
In response, the minister launched an investigation into the matter, leading to the suspension of several correctional officers.
During the inauguration of a committee to probe the allegations on Monday, Tunji-Ojo urged the members to take a comprehensive approach to uncover broader issues within the service.
He stated, “We are committed to reforming the correctional service. Your primary task is to investigate specific allegations of corruption, mistreatment, and torture by correctional officers, particularly the recent one involving Bobrisky, which I expect to be concluded within two weeks.
“A holistic and evidence-based process is necessary to reveal the truth behind these claims. We are counting on you to present facts and a way forward that will be shared with Nigerians. Let me make this clear: no one, regardless of their status, will be shielded from accountability.”
