Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Abubakar Kyari, has pointed to smuggling as a significant factor contributing to the scarcity of food in Nigeria.
Kyari made this assertion on Tuesday during his address to members of the House of Representatives at the resumption of the policy debate series at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
Also present in the session were Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sabi Abdullahi, and Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, alongside other high-ranking government officials.
“We have observed instances of foodstuff smuggling to neighboring countries, which has adversely impacted the availability of food items within the country,” the minister stated.
The Sectoral Debate series, initiated by the Abbas Tajudeen-led 10th House in November 2023, aims to enhance constitutional oversight of the executive branch of government.
