Building collapse: NIOB seeks implementation of physical planning law in Ogun

The Nigerian Institute of Building(NIOB) on Friday  called on the Ogun government to ensure immediate implementation and enforcement of the Urban and Physical Planning Law 2005 of the state.

Mr Yinka  Olatunji,  the Chairman of the institute in Ogun, stated this after a walk within Abeokuta metropolis to celebrate the 2020 Builders Day.

Olatunji said it was important for the law to be implemented and enforced,  saying this would check building construction deficiency which could lead to collapse.

The chairman added that it remained the duty of the government to monitor building production process as part of the provisions of the law which had been overlooked.

“Ogun State Government needs to implement the Urban and Physical Planning Law 2005; it is important if we want to have quality building construction and also avoid building collapse.

 

“We must put a stop to building collapse in the country. That is why we have chosen this day to sensitise members of the public to create awareness on how we can have safe building production process .

“It is only a builder that is certified under the law that should  engage in this practice. It is when people try to cut corners and engage unprofessional persons that we have disasters later,”he said.

He said that the institute would continue to support the government in nation building,  adding that building professionals would save the country from avoidable building collapse.

In her remarks, Mrs Fatima Osho,  the Registrar of NIOB, stated that the use of quacks and substandard materials contribute to building collapse in the country.

Osho noted that the institute had to embark on the sensitisation campaign in order to let the pubic know that they must engage professionals in the building industry.

She also advised government to ensure that government contractors were monitored to check sharp practices.
