  • Bill Gates to share future with Chinese

Bill Gates to share future with Chinese

By Zhao Cheng, Li Yingqi, People’s Daily

Bill Gates said he was glad to be part of the China International Import Expo during a recent exclusive interview with People’s Daily.

Gates praised China’s new achievements on poverty reduction and innovation when addressing the first Hongqiao International Economic and Trade Forum, which was held on the sidelines of the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai on Nov 5, the opening day of CIIE.
He also hailed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s remarks in the latter’s speech at the opening ceremony of the CIIE that China will open still wider.

“I am a big believer in the win-win nature of free trade,” Gates told People’s Daily, adding that all the leaders at the CIIE were very strong on this point.
He took breakthroughs in medicine as an example, saying that the US wants Chinese breakthroughs and China wants US breakthroughs. He believes that there is much to do to avoid zero-sum mentality.
“New Era, Shared Future” is the theme of the CIIE. Gates holds that “Shared Future” means China connecting to the entire world, and to help the countries that are further behind China is an important part of that.
With the FOCAC and the Belt and Road Initiative, China is doing even more to share the lessons that it has learned, including the very ambitious goal of getting rid of extreme poverty completely by 2020, Gates noted.
He remarked that the “Shared Future” is very much an intersection with the basic priority of the Gates Foundation, expressing his hope to establish partnerships with China on aid projects.
On poverty reduction, disease control, and agricultural technologies, the Gates Foundation, together with its Chinese partners, have actively started exploration and research, as well as expanded third-party cooperation in Africa, so as to make the contribution to Africa’s sustainable development and the joint construction of the Belt and Road.
During the interview, Gates introduced his cooperation on the “reinvented toilet”. He said that China has achieved huge progress in health improvement for its hundreds of millions of people over the last few decades, and the recent “toilet revolution” campaign also reflected the country’s resolution to improve toilet sanitation and safety.
“Our goal is to eventually have the price be so low that even in an African city, that fairly poor people can afford to have this breakthrough toilet in their home,” Gates said.
During his trip to China, Gates attended the opening ceremony of the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute (GHDDI). He noted he is optimistic about China’s capability of research and innovation, saying China is investing in the basic research budget and it’s growing very quickly.
“We’ve had collaborations with groups like CNBG (China National Biotec Group) that has made special vaccines here with literally hundreds of millions of units of those vaccines going out to poor countries. As we’ve done particular projects, we are building on the success of those. We are actually doing more now,” Gates told People’s Daily.
Innovation is an important factor to achieve the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals, and China has become a key part in advancing global progress and innovation, he said.
2018 marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening up. In this regard, Gates noted that what China has done was just incredible.
“The 70% poverty reduction in the world came because these 40 years, those policies have utterly changed the income level and what you expect in terms of health and infrastructure,” Gates told People’s Daily.
According to Gates, when he first came to China 25 years ago, it was hard for him to see that China would not only get rid of poverty, but also in so many issues move to the forefront, with great scientists and world-leading companies.
The Informal Senior Officials Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is about to kick off in Papua New Guinea. Gates told People’s Daily that each party wanted to have more infrastructure so that trade can work easily.
He believes that it requires a lot of communication to make sure that cooperation projects are mutually beneficial. China is actively engaged in global forums such as the APEC and played an important role, Gates added.

  • Queen Elizabeth Will Soon Introduce Camilla Parker-Bowles As ‘Queen’ For This Reason

Queen Elizabeth Will Soon Introduce Camilla Parker-Bowles As ‘Queen’ For This Reason

    By Camille Heimbrod

Queen Elizabeth II is rumored to unveil Camilla Parker Bowles as the next Queen at the Remembrance Day Service in London on Sunday.

Nicholas Bieber, a journalist for Daily Star, reported that Bowles will join Her Majesty and the other members of the royal family on the balcony for the event. Prince Charles, who will be the next King and head of the monarchy, will also be assuming an important from his mom.

Prince Charles will be in charge of laying a wreath at the Cenotaph for the second time at the service. He first did the gesture last year just months after his dad, Prince Philip, also retired from his position.

Kate Middleton will also be joining the Queen, Prince Charles, and Bowles in the balcony of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The Duchess of Cambridge is also being rumored to be another future successor because her husband, Prince William, is in line to the throne.

The changes would mark the beginning of a huge transition to the next King and Queen especially since Her Majesty has been sitting on the throne for several decades. Her husband, Prince Philip, is not expected to attend the service.

Charlie Proctor, the editor of Royal Central, told the publication that Bowles’ appearance on the balcony will help her psychologically prepare for her big role in the near future.

“In the same way that her husband has to psychologically prepare to become King, Camilla must prepare for the day she becomes Queen Consort and as part of her preparations, she is starting to make more appearances alongside the Queen. For example, Camilla has attended a number of State Openings of Parliament over the past few years with Prince Charles, an important role she must prepare for when she becomes Queen Consort,” he said.

“As many members of her family lay wreaths at the cenotaph, Camilla would be in a perfect position to stand with the Queen so she doesn’t appear as a lone figure if the 97-year-old Duke does not attend,” he added.

Michael Avenatti Calls For Trump’s ‘Immediate’ Indictment After Hush Money Report

    By Mary Papenfuss

“This is a very serious problem for Donald Trump,” says Stormy Daniels’ attorney.

Stormy Daniels’ attorney Michael Avenatti called for the indictment of Donald Trump after an article Friday said the president had played a key role in hush money payments during his campaign to keep women quiet about alleged affairs with him.

The Wall Street Journal reported Trump knew that National Enquirer executive David Pecker arranged for the tabloid to buy the rights to model Karen McDougal’s story of a 2006 affair with Trump — then never published it. Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen also paid actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 to effectively buy her silence as well during critical campaign months.

The newspaper said that the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan has evidence of Trump’s role in the hush money payments, which he has repeatedly denied knowing about.

Federal prosecutors have reportedly granted immunity to Pecker,

Avanetti, in an interview on CNN with Wolf Blitzer. called for the “immediate indictment” of Trump on “felony” campaign finance violations.

“You cannot square this report with the president’s repeated denials of having any knowledge of the payment” to Daniels, said Avenatti. “This is a very serious problem for Donald Trump. … He should be indicted. He should be indicted immediately.”

He added: “I don’t think we’ve heard the end of the details relating to this $130,000 conspiracy undertaken by Donald Trump and Michael Cohen. And my guess is that the government has audio recordings to support quite a lot of this.”

Check out the rest of the interview in the video above, and find out what surprised the attorney the most about the WSJ report.

  • China exports surprise despite US tariffs

China exports surprise despite US tariffs

China has reported much stronger-than-expected exports for October as shippers rushed goods to the United States, its biggest trading partner, racing to beat higher tariff rates due to kick in at the start of next year.

Import growth also defied forecasts for a slowdown, suggesting Beijing’s growth-boosting measures to support the cooling economy may be slowly starting to make themselves felt.

The upbeat trade readings from China offer good news for both those worried about global demand and for the country’s policymakers after the economy logged its weakest growth since the global financial crisis in the third quarter.

October was the first full month after the latest US tariffs on Chinese goods went into effect on September 24, in a significant escalation in the tit-for-tat trade battle.

China’s exports rose 15.6 per cent last month from a year earlier, customs data showed on Thursday, picking up from September’s 14.5 per cent and beating analysts’ forecasts for a modest slowdown to 11 per cent.

“The strong export growth in October was buoyed by front-loading activities by exporters …,” said Iris Pang, Greater China Economist at ING in Hong Kong, noting the month is traditionally quieter due to long holidays.

“We expect exports to remain strong towards the end of the year as businesses are afraid of a failure in the Trump-Xi meeting, which could lead to broader tariffs on more Chinese goods from the US.”

Washington has vowed to hike the tariff from 10 per cent to 25 per cent at the turn of the year, while Trump has warned if talks with Xi are not productive, he could quickly slap tariffs on another $US267 billion ($A367 billion) in Chinese imports.

Despite several rounds of US duties this year, China’s exports have been surprisingly resilient as firms ramped up shipments before even tougher measures went into effect.

Container ship rates from China to the US West Coast remain near record highs, suggesting shipments will remain solid well into November and possibly early December. China’s exports to the US rose 13.2 per cent from a year earlier in October.

In another positive sign, China’s exports by volume also showed solid growth, according to Oxford Economics, which estimated they rose “an impressive” 9.9 per cent.

  • Trump Forces Out Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Trump Forces Out Attorney General Jeff Sessions

By Masood Farivar and Steve Herman

U.S. President Donald Trump forced his controversial Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign Wednesday, setting up a possible showdown with newly energized congressional Democrats over the investigation of Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential election.

Sessions, in a resignation letter to Trump, wrote that he was stepping down at “your request,” accepting a fait accompli he’d long sought to avert despite Trump’s repeated public humiliations of the attorney general over his recusal from oversight of the Russia probe.

The forced departure of Sessions, a former Republican senator and early supporter of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, capped a turbulent tenure that hit a rough patch in early 2017 when he stepped aside from the Russia investigation shortly after taking office.

Trump blamed Sessions’ recusal for the speedy appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller and, over the course of the attorney general’s 20-month tenure, repeatedly castigated Sessions for failing to rein in what he called a “witch hunt” being led by Mueller and “17 Angry Democrats.”

While undertaking a wholesale repeal of Obama-era policies and implementing Trump’s tough-on-crime and immigration agenda, Sessions was increasingly shunned by the president, to the point that Trump told an interviewer earlier this year, “I don’t have an attorney general.”

In a pair of tweets Wednesday afternoon announcing Sessions’ resignation, Trump thanked the attorney general for his service and said Matt Whitaker, Sessions’ chief of staff and a former U.S. attorney under former President George W. Bush, would take over as acting attorney general. A permanent replacement would be announced later, Trump said.

    Donald J. Trump

    @realDonaldTrump
    · 12h
We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States. He will serve our Country well….

    Donald J. Trump

    @realDonaldTrump
….We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well! A permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date.

Though long expected, Sessions’ departure fueled Democratic fears that Trump may be maneuvering to assert control over the Mueller investigation through a trusted appointee or possibly shut down it all together.

Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House oversight committee and a frequent Trump critic, urged Congress to investigate “the real reason” for the attorney general’s “termination.”

At a testy White House news conference earlier Wednesday, Trump said he could end the Mueller investigation “right now,” but “I stay away from it … I let it just go on.”

Other Democratic congressional leaders, including House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senate Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Mark Warner issued nearly identical tweets urging Whitaker to recuse himself from the Russia investigation, citing his vocal criticism of the probe.

“Given his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations on the Mueller investigation, Mr. Whitaker should recuse himself from its oversight for the duration of his time as acting attorney general,” Schumer tweeted.

Whitaker served as U.S. attorney for the southern district of Iowa from 2004 to 2009. According to his LinkedIn profile, he headed Foundations for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT), a self-described ethics watchdog, until September 2017, shortly before joining the Justice Department.

In an opinion piece for CNN.com in July 2017, two months after Mueller’s appointment, Whitaker wrote that he agreed with Trump that investigating the president’s finances fell outside Mueller’s mandate, and he urged Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to limit the special counsel’s authority.

Asked whether Whitaker would take control of the Russia probe, Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said, “The acting attorney general is in charge of all matters under the purview of the Department of Justice.”

Flores did not directly answer questions about whether Whitaker had consulted or planned to consult Justice Department ethics experts on whether he should recuse himself from the Russia probe.

“We’re following regular order here,” she wrote via email.

John Malcolm, a former federal prosecutor now with the Heritage Foundation, a conservative research group, said he saw no reason for Whitaker to step aside.

“He is the acting attorney general. He has no reason to recuse himself,” Malcolm told VOA.

Malcolm said Sessions did “a solid job of implementing the president’s law enforcement priorities,” and he praised the attorney general for “protecting the integrity of the department and trying to keep it above politics.”

It remains to be seen whether Trump will tap Whitaker for the job permanently and send his name to the Senate for confirmation.

Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and close Trump ally, tweeted that he looked “forward to working with President Trump to find a confirmable, worthy successor.

  • ISIS left behind more than 200 mass graves in Iraq: UN

ISIS left behind more than 200 mass graves in Iraq: UN

The Islamic State group left behind more than 200 mass graves in Iraq containing up to 12,000 victims that could hold vital evidence of war crimes, the UN said Tuesday.

The United Nations in Iraq (UNAMI) and its human rights office said they had documented a total of 202 mass graves in parts of western and northern Iraq held by IS between 2014 and 2017.

Even more sites could be uncovered in the months to come, the report warned, urging Iraqi authorities to properly preserve and excavate them to provide closure for victims’ families.

“The mass grave sites documented in our report are a testament to harrowing human loss, profound suffering and shocking cruelty,” said the UN’s representative in Iraq, Jan Kubis.

“Determining the circumstances surrounding the significant loss of life will be an important step in the mourning process for families and their journey to secure their rights to truth and justice,” he said.

IS overran swathes of Iraq in 2014, executing fighters and civilians en masse and using other forms of repression to seize and keep territory in the country’s north and west.

The mass graves may “contain critical forensic material” that could help uncover the details of these violations, as well as identify the victims, the UN said on Tuesday.

UN investigators in August began collecting evidence on war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide for Iraqi courts to use in trials of accused IS militants.

Out of the 202 mass graves documented in the UN’s new report, just 28 of them have been excavated and 1,258 bodies exhumed by Iraqi authorities.

Nearly half the total sites are in Nineveh province, where IS’s onetime Iraqi capital Mosul lies and where the jihadists committed mass atrocities against the Yezidi minority.

The rest of the sites are distributed in the northern regions of Kirkuk and Salaheddin, or Anbar in the west. (News Agencies)

President Donald Trump on Wednesday attacked the news media for reporting that Democrats on Tuesday swept back into control of the House of Representatives by winning more than 30 seats.

Trump has been boasting that Republicans on Tuesday added to their Senate majorities, even though they handily lost the battle for the House of Representatives.

In other tweets, Trump seemed to argue that the only Republicans who lost their reelection bids were the ones who did not fully embrace him, whereas pro-Trump candidates marched to victory.

“Those that worked with me in this incredible Midterm Election, embracing certain policies and principles, did very well,” he wrote. “Those that did not, say goodbye! Yesterday was such a very Big Win, and all under the pressure of a Nasty and Hostile Media!”
