Reps rebuke lawmaker’s call to begin Buhari’s impeachment process

The House of Representatives has rejected one of its members’ call for impeachment processes to commence against President Muhammadu Buhari.

Hon. Kingsley Chinda, representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency in Rivers State at the House of Representatives had earlier on Sunday, in a press release, called on Nigerians irrespective of political party, tribe, or religion to compel their representatives to commence impeachment process against the president.

Hon. Chinda’s call for impeachment is not unconnected with the rising cases of insecurity being witnessed across the country.

Last week, the House resolved to summon the President over the issue.

However, House spokesman Hon. Benjamin Kalu described Chinda’s call as the “opinion of a single member of the opposition party in the house.”

He said calls for impeachment were not logical as the President is yet to appear before the House to explain what his administration is doing to address the security issue.

“If this call came post-President’s visit for the failure to dialogue well enough in securing solutions or due to his inability to put our positions to use, it would appear logical,” Kalu said.

“Unfortunately, this call is not only illogical, it appears as a tool mischievously thrown up to disrupt the agenda of the coming visit with all it sets out to achieve in the spirit of nation-building which remains the mantra of the 9th Assembly and is considered a joint task.”

Nigeria’s next president should come from the South, Shekarau gives reasons

Former Presidential candidate for 2011 general elections and current senator representing Kano Central district in the 9th National Assembly, Ibrahim Shekarau has stated that the next Nigerian president should come from the South.

He explained that a president from the Southern part of the country will help the country to attain a political balance.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, December 3, Shekarau noted that by 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari who is from the northern part of the country, would have been in power for eight years, and “common sense tells one that we should look at the other side, to the Southern part of Nigeria”.

When asked about his position on the growing call for a South East presidency in 2023, he said, “I don’t call it zoning, I would rather call it some balancing. There has to be some sense of belonging. There is what I call the constitution of common sense.

“The Constitution of Nigeria or the constitution of any of the political parties didn’t say if I am from the North, my running mate must be from the South. It is not written but if today, I am a presidential candidate from Kano and I tell you my running mate is from Bauchi, you will say something is wrong with me.

“The presidency has just been from the North for eight years. Common sense tells us that we should look at the other side, to the Southern part of Nigeria. We should recognise the North and the South, this is elementary geography and history.

“Perception is what you have to carry along. If you continue to dominate on one particular side, the perception from the other side is, ‘What about me?’”

The former minister of education also weighed in on the security situation across the country, arguing that President Buhari is breaking the law by retaining the current Service Chiefs.

2023: Kogi State Lawmakers Endorse Yahaya Bello For Presidency

The Kogi State House of Assembly has asked Governor Yahaya Bello to contest for the position of the President of Nigeria in the 2023 presidential election.

The House in its plenary session on Wednesday said their decision for the endorsement was borne out of the outstanding performances of the Governor in the state.

The Majority Leader, Abdullahi Bello while moving the motion said Governor Bello has transformed the state and rid the state of kidnapping and armed robbery.

“Yahaya Bello by his creative governance style has somehow engineered a reversal of several negative national development indicators in Kogi State. Examples abound everywhere.

“Under his watch, Kogi State has been transformed from the kidnap capital of Nigeria outside the embattled north-east, into a polity where the abduction of humans for ransom, along with other violent crimes like armed robbery have become mere opportunistic aberrations.

“The Right Honourable Speaker and Honourable Members of the Kogi State House of Assembly upon due deliberation of proper motion, therefore, do hereby unanimously make and pass a vote of confidence on his excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.”

The lawmakers added that, “this solemn call is first and foremost premised upon and borne of our belief that the subject, Yahaya Bello, is a fit and proper person, with the right mix of youth, experience, and track record to answer – same firmly and decisively in 2023 and beyond.”

The lawmakers also said the North Central Zone has not had a shot at the Presidency and Governor Bello is the right peg to lead the nation.

  • Ghana’s presidential candidate, Apasera to stop petrol importation if elected President

Ghana’s presidential candidate, Apasera to stop petrol importation if elected President

A presidential candidate for Ghana’s election, David Apasera, who is the candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC) has promised to stop importation of petrol if elected President.

Apasera made this known in an interview with Premium Times.

The 58-year-old who served as Member of Parliament between 2000 and 2009, also assured that if elected president, , Ghana’s refineries  will be functioning for the purpose of refining our crude oil to meet their demands.

He said, ‘’We still look at ourselves and wonder when we will be among the first-world countries. I don’t think those countries took up to 60 years to evolve.

‘’We must begin from somewhere and so one, we have to begin to look within and make sure we have the self-confidence. Whatever we are bringing from outside, we can produce it here.

‘’First, we will stop the importation of finished petroleum products. When the first president constructed a refinery then, we never thought we would even produce crude oil. But his vision was that crude is cheap, buy the crude oil, come and refine it and sell it to your population.

‘’Now, we have left the refinery to rot. We are producing crude oil, we export all the crude oil and then we go and buy finished petroleum products – petrol, diesel and so on, with dollars. And so, our costs are running in dollars not cedis, depreciating the cedis.

‘’We are saying the first thing we are going to do is to make sure that our refineries are functioning for the purpose of refining our crude oil to meet our demands and to export to other non-producing countries. By doing so, we get to stabilise our tenancy agreement.

‘’And the second is that we will add value to what we are exporting and also have a higher income in the aspect of crude oil.

‘’The other thing we will begin to do is to target rice production because we spend millions of dollars every year importing it. And the countries we import it from do not have more fertile ground than we do. They are just committed to doing these things more than we are. So we will go to the areas where there are difficulties, the government will apply for the land and then we will site our mills around there and employ able men to assist in the farms.

‘’In two years after we come to power, we should be able to stop the importation of rice and that will help stabilise our currency and generate jobs for the youth.

‘’We are also going to make sure that we have farmers to produce maize and millet for poultry and other animals. And why should we be importing frozen chicken when we can rear ours? It does not make sense. If we can provide investment capitals to individuals no matter how small they are, they will produce for our domestic market and someday, we will export to other countries.

‘’Fortunately now, we have the Africa free trade and that gives us a very wide population to export to. So when you are producing in Ghana, you will no longer have problems exporting to other countries.

‘’If we are able to deal with corruption to a certain level, you instill confidence in the business community. That way, anyone coming to invest in your country is assured that he will not be cheated.’’

DayBreak reports that Ghana’s election will hold on 7th December, 2020.
