Zamfara bye-elections: 14 parties vie for positions

    By Abba Kabara,  Gusau.

Fourteen political parties will participate in the coming Saturday’s bye-elections into Zamfara house of assembly from Bakura local government constituency.

The state resident electoral commissioner Dr. Asma’u Sani announces this to journalists in her office today.

She said in line with this,  copies of election guidelines were circulated to all the political party leaders during a recent stakeholders’ meeting with the commission.

Dr.  Asma’u gave the assurance that adequate arrangement has been made to achieve a free and fair election.

She explains that the constituency has ten(10) registration areas with a total of 92,697 registered voters,  14 polling units and nine voting points,  adding that the registered voters have collected 86,615 permanent voters card ( PVC),  leaving a balance of 2,235 now in the custody of the Central Bank Gusau branch.

The INEC commissioner however warns that it is important to draw  the attention of voters and all participants in the election that it is imperative to make provision for face mask considering the  lingering threats of Covid-19 pandemic.

She said no one will be allowed to join the election queue without wearing a face mask, adding however that an election official may request a voter to lower the mask for proper identification when necessary.

Regarding the security for the election process,  Dr.  Asma’u said all the participating political parties have agreed to sign a peace accord as a pledge to ensure a violence free election.

Nigeria among first countries to develop cheaper kits, says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has claimed that Nigeria is one of the first countries to develop cheaper and faster COVID-19 test kits.

Osinbajo said on Tuesday in Abuja that such kits would enable testing to be carried out in places experiencing kit shortages.

The vice president, who was represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Adeola Ipaye, said this in Abuja at the opening of i-FAIR Israel-Nigeria 2020/21 Innovation Programme, scheduled to hold between Tuesday and Thursday.

It has the theme: “Transforming Ideas into Invention”.

The centre was created to provide a platform for Nigerian innovators to use in channelling their creativity into smart solutions, products and prototypes.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari promptly established the Economy Sustainability Plan (ESP) the moment the Nigerian economy took a massive but predictable hit.

“We have been able to disburse three role support funds to more than a hundred thousand beneficiaries.

“We have also concluded arrangement to deliver electric power via solar home system to more than five million households currently connected to the national grid.

“These projects are set to impact 25 million Nigerians.

“Also, the Economy Sustainability Plan is focusing on securing digital identity covering for millions of Nigerians,” Osinbajo said.

The vice president explained that no one could have predicted what the 2020 had in store, stressing that the year turned out to be a year of innovation, thinking outside the box and creating solutions.

He added that such efforts had become the only route to the survival of the human race.

“Throughout the world and in diverse areas ranging from contactless deliveries of food and supplies, software for infection-tracking and contact-tracing, to the most rapid but safe vaccine research and production, the efforts of science and creativity to hush the pandemic, have simply been a lifesaver in the true sense.

“This is what makes this year’s i-FAIR Innovation programme between Israel and Nigeria extra special,’’ he said.

Osinbajo said the advent of COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the diversification of creativity in the science and technology sector.

He, however, observed that Nigerians had shown that they “have what it takes” to stay afloat in difficult times.

According to him, within a few months, Nigerians have been able to activate testing laboratories in each of the 36 states of the federation.

Gov Umahi sacks appointees from Anyim’s local government

Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi has sacked most of his political appointees from Ivo Local Government Area of the State.

One of his former allies and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim is from Ishiagu community in the local government area.

The sack comes barely 24 hours after Senator Anyim wrote an open letter to Umahi and copied President Muhammadu Buhari, and heads of security agencies.

In the said letter, Mr. Anyim alleged that Umahi was plotting to kill him, among other issues he raised.

The letter was a reaction to an earlier accusation by Umahi that the forth Senate President was plotting with other top People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in the state to unleash violence in the state.

Mr. Umahi had last week named the other persons allegedly in league with Mr. Anyim as Senators Obinna Ọgba and Sam Egwu and Acting Southeast Zonal Vice Chairman of the Southeast, Ali Odefa.

He said they were plotting with cultists and IPOB members to make the state ungovernable.

The duo and other Leaders have fallen out following the governor’s defection from the PDP to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

PDP debunks Ihedioha’s defection to APC

Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Wednesday, described the purported defection of Chief Emeka Ihedioha and other party loyalists, to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as “a fake news, sponsored by failed politicians”.

The State Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ogubundu Nwadike, equally described the news, which is currently trending on other social media platforms as “mischievous and poorly scripted”

He insisted that there was no iota of truth in the rumour making the rounds in some newspapers, as well as other social media news platforms, alleging plans by Chief Emeka Ihedioha and some notable leaders to decamp to the APC.

His words: “Ordinarily, we would not dignify such inanity with an official response, but to ensure that nobody is held in doubt about the falsehood inherent in the said story.

We not only declare unequivocally that Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha has no plans to leave our dear party, but we authoritatively add that he and other leaders of our party in the state have no reason to contemplate such action.

“It is very evident that Rt. Hon. Ihedioha, a life member of the National Executive Committee, NEC, of our party, is a consequential stakeholder and leader whose loyalty and commitment to the PDP since its formation, has never been called to question.

“His integrity quotient has been tested and proven. It may be necessary to remind all that it was via PDP that he served our country in various high offices, including Chief Whip, Deputy Speaker and Speaker of the House of Representatives and only recently, elected Governor of Imo State overwhelmingly by the people.

“However, we are not oblivious of the clandestine efforts by fifth columnists, who have perpetually lost sleep over the goodwill, respect and massive support Rt. Hon. Ihedioha enjoys in the state and across the country.

“The good news is that the sponsors of the joke, are not unknown to Imolites and Nigerians. Without any need to yet publish their identities, we will only assure them that their pettiness is inconsequential.”

He used the opportunity to not only assure their members, supporters, Imolites and Nigerians in general, to completely disregard the rumour but also insisted that Chief Ihedioha never contemplated such a move.

While saying that “only recently, a member of the Imo State House of Assembly, representing Orlu State Constituency, Hon. Paschal Okolie, announced his defection from the ruling APC to our party, with his loyalists and we are expecting more to follow soon.”

Mazi Nwadike also said that “Imo PDP under the watch of Engr. Charles C. Ugwuh is intact and there is no crack or leakage anywhere.”

Be Patient With Military, FG Begs Nigerians

In the aftermath of Saturday’s killing of farmers by the Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State, the federal government has implored Nigerians not to lose hope in the capability and commitment of the military to defeating the terrorists.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made the plea yesterday in Lagos during a meeting with online publishers.

Mohammed said Nigerians should continue to support the men and women in uniform who are fighting the terrorists with determination.

He described the killings as “an act of cowardice and savagery by a group of deranged terrorists,’’ adding that “it does not reflect the progress being made by the military against Boko Haram.”

Mohammed said, “Going after soft targets is an act of weakness and desperation by the terrorists who have suffered huge setbacks in the hands of the military in recent times.

“The modus operandi of a losing terror group is to go after soft targets in order to stay relevant and it’s not only Boko Haram that does that.

“In 2019, Al-Shabab attacked DusitD2 Complex in Nairobi, Kenya, killing more than 20.

Northern Elders Forum says if Buhari were honourable he would resign over Borno attack

The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) has reacted to the attack of 43 rice farmers in Borno State who were beheaded by Boko Haram insurgents during a fatal attack on Saturday.

In a statement signed on Tuesday by Director of Publicity and Advocacy of the northern elders forum, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, they called for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari, following the spate of insecurity in the country.

“The northern elders said In civilized nations, leaders who fail so spectacularly to provide security will do the honourable thing and resign,” the statement concluded”.

The Northern elders made the call while lamenting that the lives of Nigerians no longer have value under Buhari’s administration and thus added that the President should toe the path of honour and resign for failing to ensure the security of Nigerians.

Reacting further, the Northern elders added that the attack on the farmers was greeted by the most insensitive response by spokespersons of the President who gave a lame excuse that farmers had not sought permission from the military to harvest produce upon their attack.

The statement by the Northern elders reads thus in full; “Northern Elders Forum (NEF) joins Nigerians in expressing outrage at the killings of farmers in Borno State and many other people on a daily basis in many parts of the North. Our voices have been raised without pause for a long time against pervasive insecurity in our region.

“These particular killings have been greeted by the most insensitive response by spokespersons of the President. The lame excuse that farmers had not sought permission from the military to harvest produce merely exposed the misleading claims that our military had secured vast territories from the insurgency.

“Under this administration, life has lost its value, and more and more citizens are coming under the influence of criminals. We do not see any evidence of a willingness on the part of President Buhari to honour his oath to provide security over Nigerians.

“In civilized nations, leaders who fail so spectacularly to provide security will do the honourable thing and resign,” the statement concluded.

It’s too early to consider South-East for 2023 presidency – Rotimi Amaechi

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has said that considering a candidate from the South-East for the 2023 election is a bit too early.

Amaechi made this known during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday.

He, however, backed Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola’s comment of having respect for zoning by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

”I believe that the zoning which was done in the north and south should be respected, just like Fashola said.
“The best conversation to have now is how to deliver on the railway, maritime as it pertains to the responsibility assigned to me by the president.

“Why not allow me to complete the responsibility that has been given to me by the president which is being the minister of transportation,” he said.

  • Umahi after my life, Former senator, Anyim raises alarm

Umahi after my life, Former senator, Anyim raises alarm

Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim on Monday petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari, Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu and the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged plot to kill him for not defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He alleged that Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi was behind the plot.

Anyim said Umahi was in his house on November 20 to advise him to defect from the PDP to the APC, adding that he had declined.

Anyim said no amount of blackmail or intimidation will compel him or any of the PDP leaders to follow the governor.

He said Umahi is suffering from delusion and he needs help.

The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) said he and key leaders in Ebonyi State are not engaging cultists and members of the proscribed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) to kill and cause crisis in the state.

He said Umahi pointed accusing fingers at some leaders in the state in a circulated media briefing on November 27, after a formal State Security Council meeting. Also, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi said Umahi’s defection is not as important as the problems currently confronting the country.

Anyim, who raised the alarm in an open letter, which was sent to Umahi, President Buhari and the IG, said his blood is not available for Umahi in pursuit of his ambition.

Anyim said in part: “I would not have bothered to respond to this gibberish by a sinking man but for the compelling need to put the records straight and forewarn the public about the sinister plans of a man who personifies everything ignoble, shameless and despicable.

“Umahi is pitiably delusional. He is a prisoner of his greed and inordinate ambition. Here is a drowning man looking for who to drag down with him.

“Umahi has made his worst mistake after his latest misadventure by taking on me and other noble and respectable sons of Ebonyi State who have served and continued to serve our dear state with resolute commitment, dedication and integrity.

“The case at hand is his defection to APC on the 19th of November, 2020. The discerning public knows that he has been on the plan for a long time and when he decided to consummate it, he suddenly concocted an accusation against PDP, that PDP was not willing to zone Presidency to the Southeast. “When he spews these allegations, he would not even mind whether they make sense or not. He did not have the mental capacity to reason that no party in less than two years into a new term would bring the next election unto the front burner.

“That even in APC where he has gone to, the issue of next election is not yet on the table as doing so would distract the government.

“People who know Governor Umahi know that he normally starts this way whenever he is hatching a sinister plan. He raises dusts, makes wild allegations and accusations against people just to divert the attention of the public before he strikes.

“It is public knowledge that Governor Umahi had been planning his defection to the  APC for a long time. In his delusion, he believed his own lies that he is the only man who matters in Ebonyi State. He did not consult with anybody notable before consummating his defection to APC. After his defection, no person of note followed him.”

Anyim recalled how Umahi stormed his house to beg him to leave the PDP for the APC.

He said he declined Umahi’s offer, stressing that he did not take kindly to it.

He said: “Unable to contain and manage the unsavory reactions from the public, he ran to my home in the company of some high-profile people, on the 20th of November 2020, and pleaded with me to defect to APC, saying that if I do, others will follow suit.

“I pointed out to him that his approach has made it almost impossible for anybody to defect. He pleaded with me that if I cannot defect now, I should not attend any PDP meetings, and I said no, I must attend PDP meetings as long as I am in PDP.

“He realised that he could not persuade anybody when he saw the crème of Ebonyi elders and citizen, that gathered for the inauguration of PDP Caretaker Committee. He could no longer sleep and declared war on everyone who has refused to defect with him.”

The ex- President of the Senate said he could not ignore Umahi’s threats because of the governor’s antecedents.

He added: “I would not have taken his present spew of baseless allegations seriously, but because I suspect he is under a spell and perhaps something is pursuing him.

“He may have been told that he will need to kill before he would achieve his present enterprise and so to build up a scenario for him to kill, he will need to spew allegations of killings even when they make no sense.

“I have no doubt that Governor Umahi may have been told that he needed blood to accomplish his present enterprise. Otherwise, how can a man in his 6th year as Governor of a state suddenly realise that a former President of the Senate, a former Governor of the state and two-time serving Senator Dr. Sam Egwu, Senator Obinna Ogba, two time serving Senator, are now cultists and IPOB members. Something is wrong somewhere.

“It is obvious that either something is pursuing Governor Umahi or that he is pursuing something. For those who know him well, please notice that his lips have shifted out of shape and his eye balls shrinking. Something is pursuing Gov. Umahi.”

Anyim said he decided to cry out because “ Umahi’s modus operandi are well known and his moves are easily predictable.”

He said:” The purpose of this response is to alert the public and the security agencies in particular on the schemes of Governor David Umahi so that they will read him upfront and be wary of him and his allegations. Accordingly, all concerned should note as follows:

”I believe that Gov. Umahi needs help. He was not in this shape when I picked him. His present behaviour is certainly not normal. His behaviour and utterances are strangest whenever he puts on the costume for the new enterprise – an oversized white Agbada and an elongated red hat that over sizes his head.

“The only offence we committed is that we refused to follow Gov. Umahi in his political adventure. We do not know when belonging to parties of one’s choice has become an offence against a governor or means fighting a governor.

“It is clear that Gov. Umahi may have been told that he needs to kill a high-profile person in order to achieve his mad ambition. Ebonyians should be wise and those he is preparing to use for the killings should know that after using them he will also plan to kill them to cover his track. Examples abound.

“Security agencies, the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and judges should note that Gov. Umahi had boasted as follows:

“That one of the gains of his defection is that he has been promised absolute use of the security agencies for all that he desires to do.”

“That the Hon. Attorney – General of the Federation is his friend and will soon visit Abakaliki the second time and that he will use him to deal with those opposed to him using the EFCC.

“That he will extensively use the courts to not only make it impossible for PDP to function in the state but also to frustrate those opposed to him including sending them to prison.

“My advice is that all those concerned should be wary of Umahi so that he will not taint their soul and ruin their careers, because all his actions and schemes have black sides.

“To notify the public that I fully understand that what Umahi meant by  *”this will be the last fight I will fight”, is that he will kill me so that I will not live to fight again*. While I invite the security agencies to note this plan, I want to assure Gov. Umahi that my blood is not available for him in pursuit of his ambition.

“To assure the street dinner Governor that no amount of blackmail or intimidation will compel any of us to follow him.”

Speaking on the Arise TV ‘Morning Show’, Obi said he was not interested in any political discourse at a time the country is suffering economically and the poor citizens are bearing the brunts.

But, he sarcastically asked how many people Umahi’s defection has pulled out of poverty.

Obi, who lamented the growth of terrorism in the country, also reflected on recession and the need to reduce the cost of governance.

He said: “How many people were pulled out of poverty because David Umahi left PDP? Yes, its true we have lost somebody but some other people will still join.

“The discussion now should be how do we reduce waste and cost of governance in Nigeria. I don’t want to discuss politics.

“As we are speaking now so many people doesn’t know where their next meal will come from.

2023 Presidency: Yahaya Bello under pressure to contest says commissioner

The Kogi State commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo has said that people are putting pressure on the state  governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello to contest the 2023 presidential election.

This was contained on a Twitter post on Saturday where Fanwo,  said,

“The people are calling on him to run for president but he has not come out clearly to tell us whether he is accepting that clarion call or not,” he said.

“All over the six zones, we are having a lot of people calling on him to come and run. If you look at the people calling on him, it cuts across all parties and is not just an APC thing.

“He is a unifier. He is very capable and qualified, he perfectly fits into that bracket of what Nigeria wants.”

Bello, who is currently serving his second tenure in office, became one of Nigeria’s youngest governors at the age of 40 in 2015.

“He has shown that the youth can provide quality leadership in Nigeria,” Fanwo said, citing what he said are some of the governor’s biggest achievements so far in Kogi.

“In Kogi, we have diverse ethnic groups which were not unified; there was the challenge of insecurity and underdevelopment, but he came in 2016 and was able to unite the state.

“When you look at the economy, he has been able to inject a lot of dynamism into the economic management of the state and we are also looking into agriculture.

“When you look at the challenges of Nigeria – lack of unity, insecurity, economic diversification – he has the answer to them.”

  • HURIWA Blasts Governor Umahi Over False Allegations Against PDP Chiefs

HURIWA Blasts Governor Umahi Over False Allegations Against PDP Chiefs

A frontline Civil Rights Advocacy group-: HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has called on the heads of security forces and the Armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria not to allow themselves to be used for political witchunt of leaders of the Ebonyi State chapter of the People’s Democratic party (PDP).

HURIWA stated that these select PDP Chiefs include the past and current national Assembly members just as the Rights group said the governor of Ebonyi State Mr. Dave Umahi is playing political pranks with the serious national security issues by attempting to rope in some Peoples Democratic party chieftains into a phantom allegations of funding cultists to torment crisis in Ebonyi State.

HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) spoke against the backdrop of the accusations based on tissues of gossips and conjectures made by Governor Dave Umahi against some PDP leaders in Ebonyi state including national Assembly members from Ebonyi State elected on the platform of the PDP and who refused to cross carpet to the All Progressives Congress alongside the governor of Ebonyi State.

The Rights group said the Ebonyi State governor must be called to order so he does not muddy up and mess up the security forces still smarting from the monumental public image FIASCO created by their roles in shooting peaceful protesters in LEKKI Toll Gates Lagos on October 20th 2020 which is already a matter of global concerns with Great Britain threatening to slam diplomatic sanctions on Nigeria for the violence unleashed by armed forces against peaceful protesters in LEKKI Toll Gates Lagos. “The police and the military are still battling to clean up the bad image. Let the Ebonyi State governor not be allowed to drag the heads of the nation’s armed forces into partisan politics and thereby scuttling their professional and institutional pride of place. “Umahi can not be the judge and prosecutor in his own case. He can’t be allowed to use what he even admitted to be fake news to accuse innocent Nigerians of sponsoring armed cultists to destabilize peace in Ebonyi State. Is he the Chief of defence staff or is he the Commander in chief of the Armed forces that he now determines who gets police security or not?”

HURIWA recalled that the governor of Ebonyi State,  Dave Umahi, on Friday alleged that one of his predecessors, Senator Sam Egwu, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Pius Anyim, and National Assembly members from his state who failed to cross over into APC with him were allegedly plotting to unsettle the peaceful atmosphere in the State.

HURIWA recalled that Mr. Umahi who made the vow to ‘wrestle’  his political rivals to the ground while briefing journalists shortly after a meeting with all security chiefs in the state made the following speculative and fictitious accusations against the select PDP leaders: “I want the media to note that I reported an allegation that some Ebonyi people are engaging cultists and according to them, some IPOB members to start killings and crisis in Ebonyi State in the name of fighting Ebonyi State government and the governor.

“And their leader is Senator Anyim Pius Anyim and their members are Dr. Sam Egwu, Senator Obinna Ogba, Mr Ali Odefa and others.

“This is alleged information I got and I needed to share this information with the security agency. The reason is that every governor in the state has been fought by the same set of people and it is very interesting to know that the same senator Pius Anyim fought the former governor Egwu and many people were killed.“I am not saying that this information is true or not but I needed to raise an alarm because lives will be lost, I pray to God that this shouldn’t be true. And I have asked the security agencies to reach out to them.

“Finally, I have also directed security agencies to ensure the implementation of policies on tinted glasses of vehicles in the state. The use of a siren and then the police escort”.

However,  the Rights group said the governor should be arrested after the expiration of his immunity for building on speculation to try to frame up charges of sponsorship of cultists against respected political leaders only because they insisted on the grounds of principle, equity, freedom of choice and Constitutional freedom of ASSOCIATION to remain in the PDP whilst the governor who got every political privileges and offices and positions courtesy of the platform of the PDP then decided against rational thinking to move over to the ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS.

“HURIWA is calling on the Nigerian Police Force to keep Mr. Dave Umahi on their watch list so he is taken in to defend why he had to frame up allegations as weighty as sponsorship of armed cultists against persons who refused to defect with him to his newly found political family of All Progressives Congress and these allegations even by his own admission were not even as credible as the cheapest tissues of beer parlour gossips. We want to remind the heads of the nation’s security Architectures that not too long ago, the  Nigeria Police accuse two men of providing false information leading to search on Ekweremadu’s building. HURIWA  also wishes to remind the heads of Nigerian Security that the Nigeria Police Force went on to arraign a 50-year-old man, Ahmed Echodo, for allegedly misleading the police to conduct a raid at a building belonging to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

According to the one-count charge, two defendants were accused of the offence, although only Mr. Echodo was arraigned at a magistrate court in Abuja.

Security operatives had ransacked Mr. Ekweremadu’s building on Friday morning following information accusing the occupants of criminal offences. They found nothing incriminating during the search. HURIWA preaches equity and equality before the law. The governor of Ebonyi State who has admitted reporting PDP chiefs in his state over threats to the security of his state based on hear say and speculation should be made to face the long arm of the law because nobody is above the law. Ebonyi State governor is this same person who for good 6 years as PDP governor has been quoted to have praised all these persons who he is now demonizing as political demons. How come that for 6 years they were POLITICAL SAINTS and as soon as you move over to another political party and you wanted them to move with you and they as grown adults and persons of integrity refused to betray the PDP, you then picked up road side gossips that they are funding cultists and you are playing God threatening to withdraw the security details attached to them. We totally and absolutely CONDEMNS this resort to self help and the attempt through primitive and crude means to force persons who want to remain in PDP to join you in APC. We will be taking further advocacy action to ensure that governor of Ebonyi State does not think that he is the POLITICAL GOD OF THE SOUTH EAST AND THEREFORE WILL DETERMINE WHO GOES WITH POLICE PROTECTION OR NOT. This is absurdity taken too far”.
