CDHR President Pays Tribute to Late Beko Ransome-Kuti at Memorial Lecture

The National President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Comrade Debo Adeniran, has described late human rights activist Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti as a symbol of courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice in Nigeria.

Adeniran spoke at the 20th anniversary memorial lecture in honour of Ransome-Kuti, held at Right House, where he said the late activist dedicated his life to the defence of human rights despite intimidation, imprisonment, and other risks.

He noted that Ransome-Kuti was not only a medical doctor but also a leading voice against military dictatorship and state repression, adding that his activism helped strengthen peaceful coexistence and national unity.According to Adeniran, Ransome-Kuti played key roles in several organisations, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Campaign for Democracy, CDHR, and other civil society coalitions, contributing significantly to the institutionalisation of civil liberties in Nigeria.“He understood that human rights are inalienable and not privileges granted by the state,” Adeniran said, adding that Ransome-Kuti consistently stood up for victims of unlawful detention, abuse, and suppression of free speech.

The CDHR president urged civil society groups to sustain the values of integrity, unity, and accountability that defined Ransome-Kuti’s life, stressing that the best way to honour his legacy is through continued advocacy and action.

He called on activists to recommit to building a just society where the rule of law prevails and citizens’ rights are protected.
