Former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) by incorporating an electronic collation system. Chidoka believes that such a system would prevent vote manipulation and errors associated with manual handling during elections.
Chidoka argued that the implementation of this system would reduce issues like votes exceeding the number of accredited voters, a problem observed in previous elections, such as the Imo State governorship race. He also suggested that INEC should test this system in the upcoming Edo and Ondo governorship elections, emphasizing that it would ensure the accuracy of results and enhance public trust in the electoral process.
By uploading results directly from the BVAS, Chidoka asserted that arithmetic errors and discrepancies would be minimized, leading to a more transparent and reliable election outcome. He recommended that INEC upload both the BVAS-generated results and the manually recorded ones to further safeguard the process.
Chidoka’s proposal aims to modernize Nigeria’s electoral system, ensuring that the results reflect the true will of the voters and eliminating the potential for manipulation.
