China, Nigeria strengthen people-to-people ties through Wushu cultural exchange

Practitioners, students and cultural enthusiasts gathered at the China Cultural Centre in Abuja over the weekend for the 2026 China–Nigeria Wushu Martial Arts and Cultural Exchange, an event held to commemorate the Chinese New Year and 55 years of diplomatic relations between both countries.

The programme featured a visiting delegation from the Chinese Wushu Association alongside officials of the Nigeria Wushu Kungfu Federation, with performances, demonstrations and interactive sessions designed to promote cultural understanding through sport and tradition.

In his address, the Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and Director of the China Cultural Centre, Yang Jianxing, described Wushu as a unifying cultural expression that transcends language and geography. He said scheduling the exchange during the Lunar New Year festivities was deliberate, offering Nigerians a closer experience of Chinese heritage while reinforcing the friendship between both nations.

Yang explained that the Lunar New Year, which begins on February 17, 2026, is based on China’s ancient lunar calendar created by early farming communities to observe seasonal patterns. He noted that the festival represents themes of reunion, harmony and renewal, values he said are reflected in China–Nigeria relations.

He pointed to the visual symbolism at the venue, where the flags of both countries and cultural performances by children and troupes demonstrate the spirit of connection and shared celebration.

Also speaking, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Wushu Association, Fu Bo, said the delegation’s visit was intended to foster direct interaction with Nigeria’s Wushu community and admirers of traditional Chinese culture.

Fu observed that the exchange comes at a significant time, as 2026 has been designated the China–Africa Year of Cultural Exchanges and also marks 55 years of diplomatic ties. He disclosed that Wushu will appear as an official competition sport at the Dakar Youth Olympic Games later in the year, highlighting Africa’s expanding role in the sport’s global development.

He encouraged deeper cooperation between the Chinese Wushu Association and Nigerian counterparts through joint training, competitions and continued cultural engagement, inviting local practitioners to participate actively in demonstrations and sparring sessions with the visiting team.

For his part, the North Central Zonal Representative of the Nigeria Wushu Kungfu Federation, Sesan Adeboyejo, said the event reflected the growing interest in Wushu among Nigerian youths and the strength of China–Nigeria cultural ties.

He described Wushu as a blend of discipline, philosophy, health and heritage, aligning with national efforts to use sport as a tool for youth empowerment and social development. Adeboyejo, however, stressed that expanding the reach of Wushu across communities would require stronger institutional support and corporate sponsorship.

He appealed to Chinese firms operating in Nigeria to support initiatives such as training facilities, scholarships, competitions, outreach programmes and coach development, noting that such backing would help channel young people toward positive pursuits while strengthening cultural links at the grassroots.

The event concluded with professional demonstrations by Chinese and Nigerian practitioners, as well as a practical training session led by the visiting delegation, leaving participants with a deeper appreciation of Wushu and the cultural bond it represents between the two nations.
