Controversy arises as government and police plan to demolish 20 barracks in Lagos.

Over the years, the Nigeria Police barracks throughout the country have been a source of embarrassment due to their dilapidated and uninhabitable structures.

The deplorable condition of the police facilities, including the barracks, is undeniable. These structures are in a state of advanced decay, rendering them unsuitable for habitation. One such example is the police barracks near Kam Selem House at Obalende roundabout in Lagos, which has not seen any renovations in its 60-plus years of existence.

Given this dire situation, there have been persistent demands from various quarters urging the government and police authorities to address the issue promptly. Unfortunately, these calls for intervention were not heeded for a considerable period. However, recently, the police authorities have taken a courageous step by announcing their intention to demolish 25 barracks situated in different parts of Lagos State. They claimed that the affected structures failed the integrity test conducted by Lagos state government. But the far-reaching implication of this announcement is that over 2000 policemen and members of their families will be evacuated from the dilapidated barracks.

Procedure for demolition

Explaining the procedure to be adopted in the exercise, Force Public Relations Officer, who flew into Lagos to address journalists, said the Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba, issued a directive that those living in these Barracks be issued a one-month notice to vacate their accommodation spaces.

He, however, added that the directive will not be carried out all at once but will be implemented in phases to ensure that all officially recognized and lawful residents of the affected Barracks are properly catered for.
