Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has assured that his administration will continue to support initiatives that promote economic growth, peace, unity, and overall development across the Niger Delta region.
The assurance came during a ceremony at Government House, Asaba, where the state received the Torch of Unity for the 2nd Niger Delta Games. Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme represented the governor, noting Delta State’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure and fostering a culture that creates opportunities for youth while attracting investment.
Governor Oborevwori thanked the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Dunamis Icon, the Games’ consultants, for providing a platform to discover and nurture young talents to reach global standards. Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, praised the governor’s support and the NDDC’s commitment to positioning the region as a hub for sports in Nigeria. He added that Delta State athletes are undergoing intensive training to improve on their performance from the inaugural Games and challenge Bayelsa State for top honors.
Sir Constantine Ikpokpo, Managing Director of Dunamis Icon, highlighted that the Games aim to identify talent while curbing poaching, ensuring that young athletes from the Niger Delta can develop fully. The Torch of Unity was later handed over to NDDC representatives and former Nigerian swimming star Blessing Forcados for transit to Ondo State.
The 2nd Niger Delta Games will officially open on Saturday, February 19, 2026, at 5:30 pm at Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, with team arrivals beginning the day before.
