The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to international airlines against deporting Nigerian passengers or denying them boarding midway due to visa or travel restrictions. The regulatory body described the practice as unacceptable and threatened sanctions against violators.
Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, stated on Thursday that the agency had received multiple complaints from passengers who were sold tickets and flown halfway to their destinations, only to be denied entry and sent back to Nigeria.
“These actions, which involve the refusal of boarding or entry at transit stops due to visa or travel restrictions, have caused significant distress to passengers and damaged the reputation of Nigeria’s aviation sector,” Achimugu said.
He emphasized that airlines have a responsibility to inform passengers about any travel restrictions before departure, ensuring they are not stranded at transit points or forced to return to Nigeria.
Strict Compliance Required
Citing the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), the NCAA reminded airlines that they and their agents must notify passengers in advance of any potential admissibility issues. Airlines are expected to verify passengers’ travel documents and visa requirements before ticket issuance and boarding.
With immediate effect, the NCAA warned that any airline found engaging in these practices will face regulatory action, including fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties deemed necessary.
“The NCAA will no longer tolerate these occurrences,” the statement read. “We expect full cooperation from all airlines to uphold the integrity and professionalism of the aviation industry while safeguarding Nigerian passengers.”
