Desperate Act in Kenya: Man Self-Immolates Amid High Cost of Living Protests

By Daniel Edu

In a shocking incident that underscores the mounting economic pressures faced by many, an unnamed man in Kenya has set himself ablaze in protest against the exorbitant cost of living in the country.

The Kenyan citizen reportedly joined a group of demonstrators on Thursday, August 17, in the Central Business District of Mombasa City, united in their outcry against the current state of the nation’s economy.

Witnesses recounted that the individual, positioned on a concrete block near a petrol station in the Mwembe Tayari area of Mombasa, remained motionless for a time before dousing himself with a flammable liquid and igniting it, all while onlookers observed and some even captured the tragic incident on video.

Despite pleas from those around him, urging him to hold onto hope for better days ahead, the man remained resolute in his decision to take his own life.

Following this harrowing act, the injured individual was urgently transported to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital. According to reports from Mombasa County Chief Fire Officer Ibrahim Basafir, the man suffered severe burn injuries but remains alive and is presently receiving medical attention.

In the wake of the incident, conflicting accounts emerged regarding the man’s motivations. While some bystanders conveyed to reporters that the self-immolation was a desperate response to stolen goods, others suggested that this drastic act was a response to the overwhelming financial burdens he faced.

Initial reports indicate that the man doused himself with a flammable substance before setting himself on fire. Despite the desperate pleas and encouragement of those present, he proceeded with his drastic act.

A local County Chief expressed concern over the incident, stating, “We have already rushed him to Coast General Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.” The police have yet to question the man regarding the factors that drove him to take such drastic measures.

It is a tragic reminder of the depth of frustration and despair many individuals are grappling with as they contend with the challenging economic circumstances in the country.
