Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), attributing his decision to the party’s failure to provide credible leadership and effectively address Nigeria’s growing political and governance challenges.
In a resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye announced his immediate withdrawal from all party activities. The letter was made public via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” Melaye wrote.
He explained that his exit was driven by what he described as the party’s “lack of potency and capacity” to rescue the country from the deep-rooted political decay afflicting its institutions.
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” the letter stated.
Melaye, who was the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 Kogi State election, said the decision followed deep and sober reflection on the state and direction of the party.
“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in its activities or support its agenda,” he added.
He requested that his resignation be treated as a complete and final withdrawal from all levels and structures of the party.
“In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” the letter concluded.
In his closing remarks, Melaye expressed appreciation for the opportunity to have served under the PDP’s platform during his time as a member.
