Drama as Kaduna Farmer Represents Himself in Appeal Court Over Land Dispute

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

A farmer from Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Luka Saidu, on Thursday represented himself before the Kaduna State Customary Court of Appeal in a protracted land dispute after telling the court he could not afford legal representation.

Saidu urged the three-member appellate panel to uphold the judgments of two lower customary courts that had earlier ruled in his favour over ownership of a disputed farmland in Dangyolmi, Kachia Local Government Area.

“Since I cannot hire a lawyer, I will stand for myself,” Saidu told the court, praying it to affirm the judgments delivered by the Customary Court, Sabon Sarki, on February 15, 2022, and the Upper Customary Court, Gumel, on May 26, 2026.

Counsel to the appellant, however, urged the court to set aside the decisions of the lower courts, arguing that the judgments lacked merit.

After hearing both parties, the court adjourned the matter until September 17, 2026, for further hearing.

The dispute centres on ownership and possession of a parcel of farmland located at Dangyolmi in Kachia Local Government Area.

In Suit No. CCSS/CV/13/2021, the Customary Court in Sabon Sarki ordered that possession of the disputed land be handed over to Saidu.

The court directed Irimiya Hyet and Emmanuel Audu to surrender the land, describing its boundaries as DanBauchi to the north, Joseph Bahago to the south, Irimiya Hyet to the east, and the road leading from Dangyolmi to Walizo to the west. It also ordered that a report of execution be filed immediately.

The Upper Customary Court sitting in Gumel, Kachia, reaffirmed the judgment in Suit No. UCC/KCH/64/CV/2025 and ordered Aminu DanBauchi Gajere to surrender possession of the same farmland to Saidu.

The appellate court also directed that compliance with its order be reported.

Speaking to journalists, an eyewitness to the origin of the dispute, Francis Saidu, said the disagreement began after a resident sought permission from Luka Saidu’s family to build a house on part of the family land.

According to him, the request was declined because the land was already being cultivated by Luka Saidu.

He alleged that although the individual later built on another nearby plot, members of another family subsequently claimed ownership of the disputed farmland, resulting in litigation.

Francis said traditional authorities, including the village head and district head, as well as the Divisional Police Officer in Kachia, initially attempted to resolve the matter before it was taken to court.

He added that Luka Saidu was once arrested and detained for a day over allegations of criminal trespass before the case was transferred to the customary court.

According to him, both lower courts visited the disputed land, heard evidence from the parties and their witnesses, and ruled that ownership belonged to Luka Saidu.

Dissatisfied with the judgments, the opposing parties appealed the decisions, leading to the ongoing proceedings before the Kaduna State Customary Court of Appeal.

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has called for a thorough investigation into the disruption of a political meeting at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre in Effurun, Delta State, warning that rising political violence could affect the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Strategy and Communications, Godwin Anaughe, Omo-Agege condemned the reported attack on an APC Delta Central leaders and stakeholders’ meeting, where suspected thugs allegedly disrupted proceedings and injured the Delta State Government’s Senior Special Assistant on Protocol, Temple Mudi.

The former senator described the incident as a threat to democratic participation and urged security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible. He also appealed to political actors to embrace peaceful engagement.

Omo-Agege further referenced an earlier incident involving Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, who he said was allegedly prevented from accessing his community’s town hall in Agholokpe. He urged authorities to investigate both incidents.

He specifically called on the Delta State Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Inspector-General of Police to conduct comprehensive investigations. He also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations, and the international community to monitor political developments in Delta State.

Omo-Agege reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful democratic participation, stating that violence should not be allowed to undermine the electoral process.

75% of Doctors Leave Nigeria Within Two Years of Graduation, Says Akwa Ibom NMA Chairman

The Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Akwa Ibom State, Prof. Aniekan Peters, says about 75% of newly qualified doctors leave Nigeria within two years of graduation, citing poor remuneration and working conditions as major reasons for the trend.

Speaking with journalists in Uyo during activities marking the association’s Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, Peters called on the Akwa Ibom State Government to establish at least seven medical training institutions to help address shortages of healthcare professionals. He said the migration of doctors, often referred to as the “Japa” phenomenon, has made it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain medical personnel in the state.

According to Peters, doctors earning about ₦400,000 monthly in Nigeria can earn significantly more abroad. He said the NMA is proposing a 2,000% increase in doctors’ wages in the state to improve retention.Peters also noted that recent recruitment exercises failed to fill approved vacancies. He said only about 50 doctors were recruited despite approval for 400 positions, while authorities also struggled to recruit 700 nurses until entry requirements were adjusted.

He commended Governor Umo Eno for approving a medical school at Akwa Ibom State University but argued that more institutions are needed. Peters said the state should expand medical education by upgrading existing health facilities, including the General Hospitals in Ikot Ekpene and Eket, as well as the Ibom Specialist Hospital, into medical training centres.
