Dumba Attacks, Killings: Governor Zulum Condemns Terrorism, Commiserates with Victims

Calls for Thorough Investigation and Decisive Action by Armed Forces

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has strongly condemned the deadly attack on farmers and fishermen in Dumba, near Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area, perpetrated by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on Sunday, January 12, 2025.

In a statement released on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, the governor assured citizens that a thorough investigation is underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack. Initial reports indicate that about 40 farmers lost their lives, while others who fled are being traced to reunite them with their families.

Zulum’s Call for Action

Governor Zulum, expressing deep sorrow, called on the Armed Forces under Operation Hadin Kai to intensify efforts to track and neutralize the insurgents operating in the Dumba area and other enclaves around Lake Chad.

“With deep sorrow and anguish, I received the sad news of the attack on Dumba, where scores of our farmers and fishermen were killed by the terrorists. On behalf of the government, I sympathize with the victims’ families. Let me assure the citizens of Borno that this matter will be thoroughly investigated for further necessary action,” the governor stated.

He further urged the Armed Forces to take decisive action against the perpetrators, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens.

Caution to Citizens

The governor highlighted that the victims had ventured beyond security corridors demarcated for safe farming and economic activities. He warned against straying into unsafe areas, which are prone to terrorist attacks and landmine contamination.

“The government has clearly marked safe zones for farming and other activities to allow the military to focus on clearing insecure areas. It is critical for citizens to remain within these safe corridors to avoid unnecessary risks,” he said.

Support for the Armed Forces

Governor Zulum commended the Armed Forces for their relentless efforts in clearing vast tracts of land for human resettlement and agricultural activities. He reiterated his administration’s resolve to provide sustainable solutions to internal displacement while ensuring safety and security.

“The government acknowledges the sacrifices of our gallant security forces and calls on citizens to report any suspicious activity near their settlements and farmlands to enable swift action,” the statement added.

This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Borno State and the governor’s commitment to restoring peace, ensuring citizens’ safety, and fostering economic recovery in the region.
