A coalition of civil society organizations under the banner of Global Initiatives for Good Governance (GIGG) has called for an immediate investigation into the loss of lives during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Kano State on Sunday.
In a statement on Monday, the coalition, led by Malami Abubakar Yahaya Capenta, blamed the tragedy on the disregard for the police ban on the Durbar festival by the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
Coalition Questions Emir Sanusi’s Defiance of Police Ban
The group expressed concerns over the emir’s alleged decision to defy the police directive prohibiting the traditional horse-riding event. The Kano State Police Command had announced the ban on the eve of Sallah as a security measure to protect lives and property.
GIGG commended security agencies for their professionalism in handling the situation despite heightened tensions but insisted that Emir Sanusi and those who enabled him must be held accountable.
“Justice Must Be Served” – GIGG
The coalition emphasized that accountability is crucial to restoring public trust and preventing further abuse of power.
“Our state deserves governance that prioritizes the welfare and safety of its citizens over political grandstanding and reckless displays of authority,” the statement read.
They outlined three key demands:
- Accountability: A full investigation into the deaths and injuries caused by the alleged violations.
- Justice: Prosecution of all officials involved in defying the police ban and endangering lives.
- Transparency: A public explanation from the Kano State Government on its actions and alleged disregard for human life.
GIGG vowed to continue advocating for justice and good governance, urging Kano residents to hold their leaders accountable.
“We will not relent in our pursuit of justice and good governance. The people of Kano deserve better,” Capenta concluded.
