In the ongoing legal saga involving the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, a contentious situation arose at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday. After Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted Emefiele bail on charges of illegal firearms possession, the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) officials, who were present to take custody of the defendant, left the court without him.
The situation escalated when the Department of State Services (DSS) refused to hand over Emefiele to the NCS officials, as directed by the court. This disagreement led to a heated altercation between representatives from both agencies, resulting in a senior-ranking prisons official being seriously injured.
However, the tension was defused when a senior female DSS operative arrived at the court. She engaged in a brief discussion with the prison officials, and subsequently, they decided to vacate the court premises.
The exact reasons behind the custody dispute remain unclear, and further developments in the case are expected to shed light on the matter.
