The Federal Government of Nigeria has responded to a security alert issued by the United States Embassy, which restricts its staff and their families from engaging in non-official travel to military and government facilities in Abuja, citing heightened global security concerns.
Reacting to the development, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, urged Nigerians to go about their lawful activities without fear, stressing that the Federal Capital Territory remains safe.
US Embassy Alert
The US Mission in Nigeria had earlier informed American citizens that, in light of rising global tensions, embassy staff and their families are barred from visiting Nigerian military sites or government facilities in Abuja unless on official duty.
The advisory also warned US nationals to remain alert, avoid large gatherings, limit unnecessary movement, and review their personal security plans.
“Avoid predictable routines. Be aware of emergency exits when entering buildings,” the advisory stated.
It added that the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain fully operational.
FG: No Cause for Alarm
In a statement titled “Abuja Remains Safe For Citizens And Visitors Alike”, Minister Idris acknowledged the embassy’s right to issue advisories but emphasized that there is no specific or imminent threat in the capital city.
“While we respect the right of foreign missions to take precautionary measures, it is important to state clearly that Abuja remains safe for residents, visitors, and investors alike,” he said.
The minister also noted that Nigerian security agencies have been proactive and successful in neutralizing threats, assuring that the government is fully committed to maintaining the capital’s reputation as one of the most secure cities in Africa.
“Our security architecture is not only robust but continuously evolving to address emerging threats. There is no cause for alarm,” the statement read.
Idris encouraged all residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and continue with their daily routines without panic, adding that the government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all.
