Fifty-nine people narrowly escaped death after a Max Air aircraft, with registration number 5N-MBD (B733), crash-landed at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) on Tuesday night.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred when the aircraft, carrying 53 passengers and six crew members, arrived in Kano from Lagos.
According to one of the passengers, the plane’s front tire burst into flames at approximately 10:19 p.m., causing panic on board.
“As soon as the aircraft’s tire burst into flames, smoke filled the cabin, and we had to evacuate through the emergency exit,” the passenger recounted.
“While we were exiting, airport fire service personnel were already spraying the aircraft with water to contain the flames.”
Confirming the incident, Max Air’s Kano Station Manager, Malam Bello Ramalan, assured that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated.
“I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank God for everyone’s safety. Our top priority remains the well-being of our passengers and crew.”
Ramalan explained that standard emergency procedures were followed, including immediate evacuation, pilot isolation, and coordination with investigative authorities.
“We are collaborating with the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) and the Aircraft and Equipment Department (AED) to determine the cause of the incident. Preliminary findings suggest a tire malfunction triggered the emergency.”
He reiterated Max Air’s commitment to passenger safety and pledged full cooperation with authorities to prevent future occurrences.
“Once again, we regret the inconvenience caused,” he stated.
