FOCAC: China and Nigeria upgrades Relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Nigerian President Tinubu, who was in China to attend the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit.

The Nigerian President was also on a state visit to China under the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinging. The two heads of state announced the elevation of China-Nigeria relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Here are the key highlights of President Xi Jinping’s meeting with President Bola Tinubu:

1. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership: The two leaders announced the elevation of China-Nigeria relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

2. Mutual Respect and Cooperation: Xi emphasized the long-standing mutual respect and cooperation between China and Nigeria since the establishment of diplomatic relations over 50 years ago.

3. Development Potential: Xi recognized Nigeria as an influential African country with significant population and development potential, highlighting the importance of joint self-improvement and win-win cooperation.

4. Strategic Trust: Both leaders agreed to enhance strategic mutual trust and support each other on core interests and major concerns.

5. Economic Cooperation: They discussed strengthening the alignment of development strategies, promoting integrated development in infrastructure, energy, and minerals, and creating new growth points in the digital economy and new energy.

6. Cultural Exchanges: Xi and Tinubu emphasized the importance of enhancing cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between their nations.

7. Support for Stability: China expressed support for Nigeria in combating terrorism and maintaining regional stability, with a commitment to multilateral coordination.

8. Belt and Road Initiative: The leaders witnessed the signing of multiple cooperation documents related to the Belt and Road Initiative and other economic development projects.

9. Youth Training and Development: Tinubu thanked China for providing training opportunities for Nigerian youth and expressed a desire to deepen cultural exchanges.

10. Joint Statement: Both sides issued a joint statement on establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership and building a high-level China-Nigeria community with a shared future.

11. Welcome Ceremony: Prior to the talks, Xi held a welcome ceremony for Tinubu at the Great Hall of the People.
