Residents of Jos, the Plateau State capital, took to the streets on Thursday in jubilation following the election of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda Goshewe, as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Across various parts of the state capital, enthusiastic APC supporters and members of the “Next Generation” movement were seen dancing through the streets, waving APC flags and celebrating in their own unique styles.
Meanwhile, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, who represents Plateau South Senatorial District and is a former Governor of Plateau State, expressed delight at Prof. Yilwatda’s emergence as the new National Chairman of the ruling party.
Senator Lalong described the development as a source of immense joy and inspiration, noting that Yilwatda brings fresh leadership, experience, and capacity to steer the affairs of Africa’s largest political party.
Lalong, who also serves as the leader of the APC in Plateau State, said Prof. Yilwatda is exceptionally suited for the position, owing to his diverse background as a technocrat, politician, and public servant.
He highlighted Yilwatda’s rising political profile and noted that his leadership journey—including previous roles as a university lecturer, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, federal minister, and now party chairman—demonstrates his preparation for high-level service.
“The new assignment bestowed on Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda is a clear indication that his candidacy during the 2023 governorship election was widely accepted and rooted in visionary leadership qualities,” Lalong stated.
He further assured Yilwatda of his personal support and that of the entire APC family in Plateau State, noting that this appointment is a significant source of pride for the state. He recalled that Plateau last held national party leadership during the tenure of Chief Solomon Daushep Lar.
Lalong also extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the APC National Assembly leadership, governors, NEC members, and all stakeholders for placing their trust in Yilwatda at this critical time.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Makut Simon Macham, Senator Lalong called for prayers for the new national chairman and assured that the people of Plateau State and the North Central Zone would fully support him in his new role.
