From Spain to Owerri: Emmanuel Amunike Explains Decision to Coach Heartland FC

Must read

In a bid to revive the fortunes of Heartland FC, former Nigerian international Emmanuel Amunike has returned to his home club as head coach.

The decision surprised many, as the former Nigerian player had lucrative offers from abroad and was based in Spain with his family. His choice to take up the Heartland FC job has raised eyebrows, given the attractive alternatives available to him.

Born and raised in Imo State, Amunike’s return is seen as a gesture of giving back to his roots. In an exclusive interview with *SportsBoom.com*, the 1994 African Footballer of the Year explained that his decision was driven by a desire to restore Heartland FC’s pride in Nigerian football.

“I want to contribute my quota to make sure that Heartland regains its pride of place in Nigerian football. A lot has happened to the club in recent times. The team has been flirting with relegation, and other things that are not good for the image of the club,” Amunike said.

Heartland’s Fall from Grace

Heartland FC, one of the biggest clubs in southeastern Nigeria, has experienced significant decline over the last decade. Once a powerhouse, with five league titles and appearances on the continental stage, the club has found itself struggling to avoid relegation.

However, under the leadership of Amunike and with the backing of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, there is hope that the era of struggle is coming to an end. The governor has given Amunike a clear mandate to transform the team.

“The governor did not mince words on the day of my inauguration. He clearly stated that he wants me to take the club back to its glory days. I came back to help make sure the team competes for titles like Rangers, Enyimba, and other big clubs,” Amunike explained.

**Rebuilding from Scratch**

The Naze Millionaires, as Heartland is fondly called, have struggled in recent years due to poor management and inadequate recruitment. To reverse the club’s fortunes, Amunike has overseen a complete overhaul of the squad, bringing in 30 new players, mostly young and eager to make a mark.

“We needed to start from scratch. We looked at the old players and retained a few of them. We brought in new players that we believe will give us what we want. The new players are young, exciting, and ready to go. They are also teachable and eager to learn,” he said.

Amunike is confident that despite the team’s recent relegation struggles, the young squad will gain valuable experience and make their presence felt in the league.

Addressing Off-Field Issues

Off the pitch, Amunike has prioritized the maintenance of the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri. Last season, Heartland couldn’t play their home games at the stadium because it wasn’t certified for league matches, forcing the club to adopt Awka as their home ground. Amunike has emphasized the need for proper maintenance to ensure the stadium is fit for league games.

Additionally, Amunike has engaged with the supporters’ club, educating them on their crucial role in helping the team achieve its goals.

This Sunday, Heartland FC will face Rivers United in Port Harcourt, where Amunike will meet fellow 1994 AFCON winner Finidi George, now coaching Rivers United, on the touchline.

With Amunike at the helm, Heartland FC is set for a resurgence, driven by his passion, expertise, and commitment to restoring the club’s former glory.
