Fulham’s Marco Silva Praises Iwobi, Wilson’s Challenge for Starting Spot

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Fulham coach Marco Silva has revealed that Alex Iwobi is one of the players keeping Harry Wilson out of the starting lineup. This follows Wilson’s match-winning performance in Fulham’s 2-1 victory over Brentford at Craven Cottage on Monday night.

The Super Eagles midfielder started alongside fellow Hale End Academy products Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe, along with Raúl Jiménez in attack. However, it was Wilson who came off the bench to rescue the Cottagers from defeat.

Wilson replaced Nelson in the 82nd minute with the team trailing by a goal. He equalized two minutes into stoppage time, flicking the ball with his heel past the Brentford goalkeeper. Just five minutes later, he scored the winning goal with a clever header from Antonee Robinson’s cross, marking his second goal of the season.

Despite his contributions, Wilson has yet to start a Premier League game this term. Silva addressed the reasons for Wilson’s limited minutes, noting the strong form of Iwobi, Adama Traore, and Smith Rowe.

“It’s been tough, and I understand this,” Silva said after the game. “I have been having conversations with him; it’s been a tough season for him in terms of minutes.”

Silva added, “All players want more playing time, and Harry is a good example of that. He’s not getting the minutes he probably wanted.”

He praised Iwobi, saying, “Alex has been one of the best players in our team so far. And, of course, with Emile’s impact, it’s not easy to find space for everybody.”

Silva acknowledged Wilson’s excellent form with the national team, stating, “He has to wait and be patient. When the chance comes, he has to take it. He had a great night, great 15 minutes, and helped the team win, and that’s what matters most.”

Iwobi has started all 10 Premier League games for Fulham this season, contributing two goals and one assist. Despite his strong performances, he has been unable to play in his preferred position due to Smith Rowe’s versatility.
