Popular Benue gospel musician, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, better known by his stage name New Jerusalem, has died at the age of 53, leaving the Christian community in Benue State and beyond in mourning.
Famed for blending Tiv Swange rhythms with gospel messages, New Jerusalem’s music became a powerful tool for evangelism, earning him recognition both locally and internationally.
Leading tributes during a condolence visit to the late singer’s residence in Makurdi, former Benue State Governor Chief Samuel Ortom described New Jerusalem as a deeply spiritual figure whose songs touched lives across the world. Ortom recalled witnessing the global reach of his music during a session in Australia where his works were used for teaching.
Ortom, who shared a close relationship with the family, assured them of his continued support, including to the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe.
In response, the deceased’s elder brother, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, expressed gratitude, revealing that one of Israel’s sons was named Ortom in honour of the former governor’s steadfast support for the family.
New Jerusalem is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and extended relatives. His burial is scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025, in Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
