Gov Alia Approves Retirement Age, Length of Service for Teachers

Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia has approved the implementation of the new retirement age and length of service for all categories of teachers in the state that are recognized by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria.

In a press statement by Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula indicates that the circular signed by the State Head of Civil Service, Mr Abogbo Ode, the implementation takes immediate effect from May, 2023 following enactment of the harmonized retirement for teachers by the Benue State House of Assembly, which was signed into law by the immediate past government.

To this end, the new age of retirement for the teaching profession is sixty five (65) years while the length of service is forty (40) years respectively.

According to the statement, henceforth, there won’t be boundaries in the implementation process of the harmonized retirement age, and length of service for education Officers including teachers.

The statement added, however, that those who are not interested in elongation scheme are free to apply for retirement from the service in line with extant public service rules.

Meanwhile, the education Officers, teachers and the general public are to note that, the harmonized retirement age law 2023, is superior to any guideline regarding retirement age and length of service.
