Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has reinforced his commitment to supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across Borno. This assurance was given during his recent visit to Coplad Nigeria Ltd., a rice milling factory located along the Maiduguri-Bama highway, according to a statement by the SSA on New Media, Abdurrahaman Bundi.

Governor Zulum highlighted the critical role SMEs play in job creation and poverty reduction, especially as Borno continues its recovery from the prolonged Boko Haram insurgency.

Previously, Governor Zulum approved the disbursement of N814 million to 9,154 MSMEs and rolled out various economic empowerment initiatives in 2022.

The statement added: “In 2021, 13,500 SMEs in Biu, Gwoza, Ngala, and Jere Local Government Areas received N900 million. That same year, Zulum distributed N350 million to 4,250 artisans and traders within Maiduguri and Jere Local Government Area.”

Further, the governor introduced initiatives to ease local transport and trading. “In Maiduguri, 100 Toyota taxis and 500 KEKE NAPEP were provided at a 50% subsidized repayment rate, alongside 40 cars and 40 KEKE NAPEP in Biu,” the statement read.

The governor also supported various trades with funding. In 2021, over N350.15 million was disbursed, benefiting over 4,000 beneficiaries, including technicians, traders, and electronic sellers in Maiduguri.

In 2020, Zulum allocated N1 billion to 7,200 SMEs across different associations, including the Maiduguri Monday Market Traders Association, Babban Layi Textile Dealers Association, and several others.

During his visit, Zulum directed the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, and Investment to assess Coplad Ltd’s challenges and suggest ways the government can help. “One of this administration’s priorities is to support SMEs,” he stated.

The governor further instructed the Ministry of Agriculture to supply the factory with locally cultivated paddy rice to aid its operations.

Encouraging Coplad Ltd’s management, Zulum stressed the need for consistent production, noting, “We will provide necessary support, but I expect continuous operation, not sporadic resumptions and stoppages. Let’s ensure sustainable solutions for long-term functionality.”

He urged the company to consider expanding operations to create more jobs, adding, “With your expertise, look into setting up additional modular units to maximize job opportunities.”
